I like Tolkein as well - but have any of you read Dennis L McKiernans books? I highly reccomend "The Iron Tower Trilogy". I like his dwarves and elves... no hobbits but he has warrows. I've read every single book McKiernan has written. Nice enough fantasy fare.

McKiernan's stuff has developed nicely. The first five books... how the heck did he not get sued by the Tolkien estate? Good Lord! He pretty much ripped off the entire plot of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" -- or am I hallucinating?

He pretty much ripped off the entire plot of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" -- or am I hallucinating? pretty close - but he did change many things and made it different enough I suppose. The one who truly ripped the lord of the rings was Terry Pratchet with his Shannarra books. I kept getting them muddled up with the Silmarillion as well. but I adore McKiernan's books. And so far have read all of them (I think). They are impossible to get here in Australia though. I will have to order them from the UK.

And so far have read all of them (I think). Terry Brooks is the Shannara guy. Terry Pratchet is the Diskworld guy (both okay authors, IMHO...not wonderfully great, not terribly bad, just plain old O.K.) I've got less than 100 pages to go on the last McKiernan book to go, after that, no more Mitgard books (at least, if we blieve what Dennis says).

Denis did admit in the original paperback edition that he was pretty much shamelessly ripping off Tolkien because he wanted to read more stuff like LotR and since no-one else was writing it, he would.
I have been glad to see his later evolution as a writer.

(I'll betcha even Order99 won't get that particularly obscure reference!).

Heck, I should have made the comment I was about to, to the effect that order99 might have to fight off head-crushing blob-frog things. 300 quatloos on the newcomer! And I hope you relish your tranya as much as I do...

Hi all. I'm struggling with the search function and not getting the results that I expect. Can someone point me to the best threads about New Khazan (the sci-fi version of T&T)? Are there some dedicated channels here for it?
