If anyone is thinking of doing a traditional pirate game using the T&T system, I think I would recommend using the old Avalon Hill wargame "Wooden Ships & Iron Men" to handle the sea battle aspect. Clash of Arms Games has a system for warships of the fighting sail era as well, but compared to Wooden Ships & Iron Men it is quite a bit more expensive. The Avalon Hill game can be bought on Ebay, just type in Wooden Ships & Iron Men in the search bar. I've never failed to see copies available all the times I've searched for the game.

FGU games tend to be very complicated, is Privateers & Gentlemen an exception?

I'll second Hogscape's (well-deserved) shameless self-promotion. Dark Isles rocks the pants.

Wooden ships is a great classic game but tacticle games tend to not mesh well with RPGs. The ship combat system Hogscape is really sweet...in my never to be humble opinion.
