(*heh heh*) Verklud moves closer to Burt's back with sax in hand.

"Well they want him back, as long as we have him alive we have a bargaining chip"
"For all we know they surround us right now"
"If we kill him they may swarm over us"
Drugan looks the Gill-Man right in the eye.
"Now me I'm wondering if something that lives so close to humans Really can't understand us"
"Still got nothing to say Burt, if your going to speak up now would be the time"

(ooc - have to sign off for the night, and I have a feeling that we may see some action - so feel free to direct me as you all see fit (if I'm casting a spell, make it through my makeshift staff-ring though - a Veil of Shuga might come in handy if our position is bad. If you have things under control, I could just keep an eye on Bert (or try to take care of him if he's troublesome...))

Quinlan: "Hold fast lads. This footprint tells me that the gill-men are camped up ahead rather than at the pond. We'd better hold on to Burt for just a little longer. However, I think we should add another length of rope to the fiend. Also, keep an eye on the amulet, it has fell magic about it and may attract more of Burt's kin or at least be another bargaining tool if we are outnumbered..."

"Perhaps we should throw the amulet away. It might be attracting them" Alwyn suggests.

Quinlan: "I think you might have something there Alwyn but let's hold on to it until we see some evidence of that. Perhaps we can cast it down some deep ravine and watch large numbers of the slippery horrors leap after it like lemmings?"

Suddenly, with a terrible roar, four gill-men burst up from the muddy puddles in front of Quinlan and Charles. One is dangerously close, as it was lying hidden right in front of them. Quinlan sees the glitter of gold around its neck.
(The gill-men will receive half their MR in adds for two rounds instead of the usual one, as they have the advantage of surprise.)
The four gill-men mount a ferocious attack, armed with tridents, teeth and claws. (HPT: 62)
Almost simultaneously Burt (the prisoner) leaps back, trying to rip Drugan's jugular with his teeth. (Burt gets only a fourth of his MR as adds, as he is still tied up.)
Luckily Verklud is adjacent to Drugan, with his sax ready as two more gill-men emerge from the mud off to the north and rush in to help Burt. (HPT for Burt and the two others: 49)
Finally Alwyn and Poncho have their hands full with the remaining three gill-men emerging from the mud to the north and south. (HPT: 55 36)
(All in all ten opponents (with a total HPT of 147), two of which appear to be some kind of leaders. The battles are separate between the groups during the first round, but future rounds will be one big melee.
Ask for a SR if you want to try any special moves.)

OOC: Um, I hate to say this but how is burt attacking me with his hands tied behind his back in a choke knot and rope around his throat? Also aren't we kind of dead? Even if we Wizards use all our STR in TTYF I don't see how we can beat ten opponents and I don't see how we can escape. If this is how it's going down I'll use my Staff and cast a second level TTYF on one of the two trying to free Burt.

OOC: Um, I hate to say this but how is burt attacking me with his hands tied behind his back in a choke knot and rope around his throat? Perhaps you envisioned something different when you tied him up. But I understood that he has his hands tied behind his back and a rope with a choke knot around his neck and Drugan holding the other end.
The rope isn't of much use if he's coming right for Drugan (nobody asphyxiates in one round) and he looses a quarter of his adds because his hands are tied. He is trying to bite Drugan not claw him. He isn't human, but a creepy/deadly fish-man with razor sharp teeth and claws, and you let him recover his strength...
I did however calculate Burt's adds wrong, so the HPT should be 8 points lower. I'll modify the original post shortly. Also aren't we kind of dead? I haven't got a lot of experience with T&T (and none with the 1st ed.) so perhaps I did a miscalculation. Winning a battle does not however always mean that you have to kill every adversary, so perhaps there is hope yet.
Also take a look at the MR chart. Monsters are incapacitated when their MR drops below 10 in 1st ed.

Cast a 1st level Laceration at Burt & two companions (does 1st edition use the 'shock effect' for combat totals?)

Cast a 1st level Laceration at Burt & two companions (does 1st edition use the 'shock effect' for combat totals?) I'm not sure what you mean by "shock effect", can you explain a bit more? I have the 1st, 4th, 5.5th and 7.5th editions of the rules, but I do not know them by heart.

OOC: Suck it up guys. We're not dead yet.
Poncho casts his bow aside, thrusts his trident in a low throw at the legs of the nearest g-man in an effort to trip him over and then launches himself in berserker rage at the next fellow with his dagger.
Poncho spear throw to trip nearest gill-man
2d6 3 + 6 = 9 (an L1 success on LK or DEX)
OOC: By shock effect I think ragnorakk means that the spell directly reduces the HPT of the attackers. I would hope that our spells and any successful maneuvers before melee would reduce the HPT rolls that get through in this round.

"It's been nice knowing...," is all that Charles manages to say to Quinlan before the gill men are upon them.
Charles raises his shield and attempts to thrust his spear into the neck of the onrushing beast.
Attack roll: 5 + 6 = 11 + 1 = 12
OOC: Unless Quinlan can roll a 50 we're going to need some help up here. Or last rites.

Yes - by shock effect it is that spells doing damage add into the combat total for our side, but still do damage even if we lose that round (5.5 = section 2.32)

<OoC: Hey, wouldn't it be great if Drugan revealed that one of his undefined languages was actually gill-man. He didn't tell us earlier because, he's, well, quite evil. He could then cry out 'ransom' and exchange Burt and the amulet for safe passage...?>
Failing that... I guess Quinlan swings his sword for the first and possibly last time?
Quinlan takes a swing at a slimy gill-man (looks like a Ralph to me). 2d6 +5 1 + 1 + 5 = 7
Ouch, snake-eyes. I've got 5 points of armour which I'll burn up if that helps?
Quinlan: "May fate shine on you in the next life Charles!"
