Poncho wolfs down a half-ration, "Thanks Drugan!", and resumes position at the rear of the group. "We still have a long hike ahead of us so let's press on and see if we can make the tower by nightfall." OOC: apeloverage, Drugan purchased enough extra rations back in town but I think we need to stick to half-rations or risk running out. Also, we got you a pair of sandals for the road

After Drugan's comments, Quinlan eyes the jagged peaks with suspicion...
<Ooc: how about some high IQ/LK characters make open-ended Saving Rolls on the dice roller to keep an eye out for potential bandits... Or worse?>

<Ooc: how about some high IQ/LK characters make open-ended Saving Rolls on the dice roller to keep an eye out for potential bandits... Or worse?> Sure, everyone gets to roll. Take your pick of whichever attribute (IQ or LK) is higher. No need to announce the rolls here, I'll check the dice log later today and referee the results. I'll also roll for those that haven't done so already. Put "Watchfulness SR on IQ/LK" as the message in the dice log.

... I'd use my ring as a makeshift 'staff' - If this is not OK, I'll have grabbed a branch too) Yes, you can enchant your ring. But remember that it will burn out after 2 x IQ worth of spells (ST) has passed through it.

Quinlan: "Charles I've never seen anyone so alert to their environment. I am comforted by your eagle-eyed diligence. Under less trying circumstances I would doff my cap to your uncanny perception. Of course in this weather I can't afford to lose a single feather from MY hat!"

Charles simply shrugs at Quilan's praise. "You just have to keep your eyes on something other than your own splendor," Charles quips.
"Oh look." Charles stoops down to observe a small trackway across the wet trail. "A beetle walked across the path a few hours ago."

Those enjoying only half rations for breakfast feel unsatisfied and cold as you begin your march in the drizzling rain.
The wagon trail is almost completely obliterated, but being so close, you have no problem finding the entrance to the pass.
It is significantly darker in the pass, as the towering mountains cast deep shadows over the path below. In many places the heavy rain has caused rock slides that block the path. As you are without mounts or wagons these are just minor hindrances to climb over, but you are soon soaking wet and exceedingly dirty.
After four hours of toiling in the mud you reach the other side of the pass. On better days you would probably have a good view of the valley stretching out before you, but today the visibility is down to a couple of miles at best.
The remains of the wagon trail goes towards the southeast disappearing into distance. To the southwest is a large flooded area, where the streams from the mountains have pooled. A flooded stream runs from the newly formed pond towards the sea. Further south the ground seems passable, but is mostly covered with high grass and the occasional boulder, or small copse.
As you walk down the hill and start to go around the flooded pond, Charles notices the movement of several dark shapes far ahead, near the edge of the pond.
They seem to be humanoid in shape and large as men, carrying spears of some kind, but somewhat clumsy in their movements. Every now and then one will dive gracefully into the pond, sometimes emerging far out, sometimes not at all.
You have seen at least seven individuals coming and going. Three of them seem to be on guard duty at all times and they do not leave their post near the shore. The distance to them is approximately 200 yards and you are sheltered behind a copse of small trees and patches of waist high grass.
(57 EP to Charles for his SR. I'm multiplying the roll with level of success, as this was an important roll.)

Quinlan: "Well spotted Charles. Brilliant work. Perhaps you and I should go talk with these spear fishermen without alerting them to the rest of our troupe. Then if things turn foul we can fall back to meet our colleagues as bloody mayhem ensues?"
Quinlan draws his sword - but in the shadows so that the light does not catch the blade.

Poncho: "Very well spotted indeed Charles!"
"That's a brave suggestion Quinlan as I'll warrant these fellows will be trouble. If you will go down to parley then here, take these caltrops. If you must fall back in a hurry perhaps these may give them some pause. I suggest the rest of us stay hidden back in the long grass where we can keep you covered."

( apeloverage - I've got some backup rations also) "What use approaching those 'men' there? Unless they'll help us stay away from the ruins of the ancient city hereabouts...I say we leave them to theirs and keep to ours...but I'll keep my eye on you for when - I mean if - things turn bad."

Poncho: "Wise words brother Verklud - yet I, for one, am still in the mood for a fish lunch."
"We have surprise on our side here and it might bode well to relieve them of their weapons and other trinkets before we brave the tower."

Quinlan: "From the lay of the land, it looks like we must pass them anyway... We can do so on our terms, or theirs. Caltrops, thank you friend Poncho; a very cunning idea indeed!" (OOC: folks, we need to head in that direction to get to the tower - unless I've misread the situation. These 'humanoids' may be trouble but there is something in the area that's more trouble - they're taking in turns to keep an eye out for it. Quinlan would surely like to know what it is that these 7 are afraid of. We should probably be worried about it too. ). (OOC: If I'm being too cautious, someone please give me a slap and we'll move on to adventure land! ;D)

"I could go for a tasty fish myself," Charles says licking his lips. "I'm not sure how far we'll get on half rations in this harsh country. Just be ready with some magic and arrows when things go south."
Charles follows Quinlan down the slope toward the humanoids crouching low in the tall grass.
