"Yes that would be the best course of action. But let's keep active watch until nightfall just in case this place is not as deserted as it appears."

You eat the last of your meager rations while waiting for nightfall. Nothing of interest occurs during the day and those not on watch doze off in the warmth of the sun.
When the shadows lengthen, the wind calms down and the sounds of the waves lessen. Just after sunset, Alwyn notices two dark shapes emerge from beneath the black rocks of the shore, some 100 yards away. They are man-sized and strongly built, both carrying long shafts that are undoubtedly weapons. They seem to stretch their limbs for a while, speaking to each other in low, guttural croaks.

Quinlan: "Well friends, they look like gillmen from this distance and we know how troublesome they can be."
"Assuming we're all ready for further action I say we scurry up and take those two down right now. If we're furtive and lucky we may be able to position their dead bodies against a boulder or some-such to make it seem that they still live and are still on guard duty. Then with loins completely girded, we can sneak into the Mage's tower..."
"What say ye lads?"

Quinlan: "Well friends, they look like gillmen from this distance and we know how troublesome they can be." "they certainly reacted most violently to our attack on them" Alwyn agrees.

Quinlan: "Alwyn, if you remember, my intention was only to talk with them, it was they who initiated the attack with their complete lack of decorum."

"No sense worrying about who attacked who now. These gill men stand between us and the tower. Chances are they have something to do with the disappearance of the wizard that used to live here."
Charles takes a moment to consider their options.
"We have enough ranged weapons to take these two down quickly and quietly. The wizards should save their strength for the tower."
Charles readies his newly acquired trident and spear.

Poncho readies his bow. "I fear we've solved the case of the missing fisher-folk from Esperance."
"Aye, a volley of missiles and a quick charge should see the end of these two. We've cover enough in the twilight but let's be quick before the light fails completely... and then on to the base of the cliff."

They are almost 100 yards away from you, barely within bow distance. If you want to sneak closer to spear throwing distance, the person with the lowest DEX should make a L1SR on DEX to advance unnoticed. A surprise attack will double your HPT for the first round.
I've added these house rules concerning missile weapon range: bows and slings 100 yards, spears 20 yards, knives and axes 10 yards. The range can be doubled, but the target will be twice as difficult to hit. Spear throwers double the effective range of the weapon.

Quinlan will sneak up alongside the skirmishers in case he needs to close quickly and finish off the wounded before they can sound an alert...

<OoC> Hey can we start a new thread "3 - the PCs kick fishy butt"?
Flight from the Gill-Men is really quite depressing...

OK, ok. I'll start a new thread as soon as you've decided how to proceed.
As for the sneaking, if you really want to do it, make the SR, but Quinlan's got the worst DEX in the party and will need to roll 13 or more to succeed.

Poncho: "They don't seem particularly alert or alarmed. Charles you've got a tinderbox there with your torches, perhaps setting a small fire in the scrub here will draw them towards us." "Otherwise we could just try and sneak up on them... I'm game for that also. Quinlan is still wearing his lucky hat and if they do spot us we could just act nonchalant and pretend we're Gill-men." OOC: I'm leaning towards the sneak attempt - I think Hogscape will ace it
