I figured the careers-as-skills had been done somewhere. It's too obvious a nice and simple solution to be new.
I'm still surprised that this game, exactly as it is, hadn't been done before.

SPI's DragonQuest was the first time I spotted careers as skills. Then there's RISUS?

I remember DragoQuest...didn't that end up in TSR's hands? The BoL careers as skills, as well as place of origin, is intergrated into your character design in a way that actually lets you tell a story about your character, and give them a place in the world as you make them. I made 5 characters, each one unique and with a real feeling of roots in the world. 25 ncareers are given so the combinations will get tapped out after a short time but after a few sessions it is very likely that everyone will have thought up more, or at least variations on the originals that will make them unique to the setting.

Why not just have the GM design a plausible world and have players make up their own background stories that seem to be fitting for their attributes?

This is a good model to follow for a method of doing that.

Why not just have the GM design a plausible world and have players make up their own background stories that seem to be fitting for their attributes? BOL uses the careers as a means of rating capability, in such a manner that NPC's are quick and easy: Level 3 carpenter, or level 4 assassin For a PC, a level 4 means that the character has done only that; level 2 in one and 2 in another, such as Merchant 2 and Assassin 2 is a merchant of some time, who later became a proficient killer. They serve the same role, in many ways, as classes in D&D, but with a more open ended and less over the top placement, and the ability of all characters to start multiclassed and character level 4...

Not a perfect analogy Aramis but it gives the idea behind it, BoL does not use levels but point distribution. To keep this T&T related a person could do something similar with T&T. Come up with about 24 'careers' and their attendant stat bonus/penatlies. Same for kindreds. Start all characters with a base level in all stats and then choose careers to boost desired stats so they fit the type the player wants. It would be overly complex for T&T and lead to min/maxing in character building because of the other differences but it could be done.
But...I have lead us way off topic. This is a T&T forum and this thread is about the goodness that Ken gave us.
