THIS TO WILL PASS
You are walking down a dirt path, the forest on either side of you contains cedar trees whose branches intertwine. The lower branches reach the ground and the branches are so thick you can see nothing but the first set of trees. You can hear the sounds of many different birds. Fourteen feet above you the branches form a dense canopy. There are multi-colored butterflies flittering in and out of the branches. You do not know how you came to be on this path, you do not know where it is leading to nor where it would take you if you were to turn around and walk the other way. The last thing you remember was being in Raul City, Dwarf World. You are alone, you are leading a mule loaded with a large back pack, and you know every item in it and how it is packed. You are compelled to continue on this path and are not sure why.
As you are walking down the path you see ahead of you a meadow of green leaves and purple flowers. It is a large area and when you get to the meadow you see other Dwarves. Each is on a dirt path that ends in the meadow. Some of you recognize some as your companions from Dwarf World others recognize none. There is a flash of light and you are all now in a large cavern, the walls, and ceiling are covered with a radiant blue moss that creates a soft light. Some of you are once again in Dwarf World. Others have no idea. Pigswill, Rufus, and Thgar are there. In the center of your circle is Ruby, Priestess of Gembeard, she speaks, “Welcome, Gallant Adventurers, Gembeard has a task for you, follow the tunnel to the North. Beware the tunnel is wild and many different beasts may be encountered. The Rock Troll slain near Raul City has family in this area. There are also Hob, Human and Elf outlaws. Your task is let these outlaws know that slavery has been abolished by King Buckles and they can return to the inhabited area and find honest labor. You also will encounter goblins, you must find a way convince these wild goblins to stop killing dwarves, hobs, humans, and elves. Tell them of the Treaty between King Buckles and the Goblin King. If they attack you – defend yourselves but try not to kill them. We must build the peace between Dwarves, Hobs, Humans, Elves and Goblin. In a flash of light she is gone.
Each Dwarf introduces himself,
“Yimhud Giantkiller at your service.”
“Thgar Caskbrewer at your service.”
“Bulgar Weet at your service.”
“Gilfillan at your service.”
“Pigswill at your service.”
“Rufus Schnobtooger at your service.”
As you enter the northern tunnel you hear a scraping sound behind you. You turn to see the opening close behind you. Your only choice is to continue north. After walking for about an hour you come to a “y” intersection, both tunnels run north but deviate slightly to the left or right.
As you move down the left tunnel you come to a dark wide (15 ft.) stream, the current is not strong and flows to the west. The water is very murky and tepid.
Pigswill runs and then with a mighty leap jumps across the stream, he lands safely but very confused. East and West are the same but he cannot find north. If he faces the new tunnel he is facing south and if he faces his companions on the other side of the stream he is still facing south. Yet one side is in front of him and one side behind him but both are south of him.
Yimhud has a crossbow loaded with a bolt attached to a rope. He fires his cross bow and the arrow penetrates the stone wall. He holds his end of the rope and pulls it tight. Gilfillan using the rope, hand over hand he crosses the stream. Gilfillan is also confused and actually asks, "Where did north go? What is happing? Oh no, two souths make me dizzy.
Yimhud takes an arrow and with great strength sticks it into the wall of the tunnel and ties the rope to the arrow. Yimhud & Thgar cross hand over hand, when they reach the other side they feel the loss of north, but as they were expecting it and it happened gradually they understand the dis-orientation and help the others to move into the tunnel where their awareness of north returns.
This tunnel goes south and leads to an intersection of three tunnels. The Dwarves realize they have walked in a loop. The sound of heavy footsteps is heard coming from each of the tunnels.
A 3 ft. tall Rock Troll is standing in each of the tunnels. In the tunnel going south, opposite the tunnels that form the arms of a Y that go north the 3 ft. tall Rock Troll, says in the common tongue, “See, I told you thems Dwarves would come back here. Thems two tunnels is a loop. Now wees can find out what they wants…
Before either side can attack there is a flash of bright light and Ruby appears between the dwarves and the trolls. She points her staff at the trolls and says, “Hold Those Poses.” She then turns towards the dwarves and says, “Your mission is peace, do not be so quick to draw your weapons, These Trolls can hear you, they speak Dwarven listen,
The Troll continues talking, “whoa, what, I can’t move, Will cans you move? Tom, Cans you move? Will and Tom both say, “I can’t move Bill.”
Bill continues, “That big dwarf where did it come from? Maybe she know the way out of here. They gots in ainted they?”
When the Trolls speak they are speaking Dwarven
When the Dwarves speak they are speaking Troll
All now understand, speak, read and think in both languages.
Ruby disappears in a flash of bright light.
Pigswill watches and waits, looking for a tell-tale sign as to what he and his companions should do next. Gilfillan is ready with his crossbow if the confusion allows.
The rock trolls panic and begin shaking, this caused them to slowly sink into the floor. As the rock trolls regain control, William speaks, "Who was that giant dwarf?" Why mes no longer want to eat dwarf stew?" The three trolls slowly rise out of the floor and stand steady on their feet. There long arms find their stone clubs and pick them up holding them against their sides with one end resting on the floor.
William says, “If you follow the stream, downstream, it leads to a large tunnel that is an entrance to a Goblin City. There is a bridge across the stream.
As you are following the tunnel to the stream, Tom says, “Maybe we can catch some eels and have lunch. A couple of eels would be quite tasty.”
Pigswill and Gilfillan are both keen to sample eels from the river. Gilfillan asks Tom if he is good at catching them.
Tom says, "Tom catch eels just fine. Stick hand in water, eel bite Tom, Tom eat eel. No problem. You no catch eel, eel poison dwarf. Tom can nos be hurt by eel poison. When they arrive at the stream, Pigswill takes out some rope and ties one end round a ham sandwich and dangles it into the water. Pigswill feels a hard tug on his rope, when he pulls the ham sandwich out of the water he finds eleven eels hanging from the ham sandwich. Pigswill screams in delight. Pigswill prepares to cook the eleven eels. The three Rock Trolls Stick their hands into the stream and when they pull them out there are eels attached to each of their fingers and the thumb. Pigswill watches as the Rock Trolls use their sharp fingernails to cut open the eel’s bellies and gut the eels, remove the heads and skin and then eat the eels raw. The Rock Trolls watch Pigswill prepare to cook the eleven eels. They laugh and Tom says, “Dwarves has weak stomach, must cook eel before eat eel. Let’s make boats so eel not eat Dwarves raw.”
After the Rock Trolls finish their eels they begin to remove thin strips of rock from the walls of the tunnel. They each mold these strips of rock into round boats large enough to hold a Rock Troll and two Dwarves. They each then mold short poles about three feet long. Bill picks up his boat, sets it into the water and climbs aboard. Using his pole he pushes his way up stream, as he floats back to the crossing he uses the pole to push the boat back to shore.
Tom says, “Now we travel to Eel Stream Goblin City and Dwarves do not get bit by tasty eels.”
Thgar and Yimhud enter Will's Boat. They wait while the others enter a boat.
Pigswill and Gilfillan enter Tom's boat.
Pigswill and Gilfillan embark and attempt to find their sea legs. Neither are familiar with boat travel and are struggling a little with balance until seated.
Gilfillan is concerned this will through his aim off - and he takes great pride in this.
"How do you hunt deer and boar in these things?" he complains.
Tom says, “No hunt out of boat, fish from boat.” He sticks his hand in the water and pulls out an eels. He guts it with his sharp fingernail and bites off the head. As he holds the fish head over the stream, there is a swirl as a big fish rises out of the water and eats the severed head. Tom stabs the fish with his paddle and flips into the boat. It is flopping around on the bottom of the boat. The fish is 3ft. long and weight about 25 lbs. It has long sharp teeth and is snapping its jaw shut and then opens its mouth and snaps it shut again. Tom reaches down and squashes the fish’s head in its hand. The fish stops moving. “Now we have fish for dinner.” He says with a wide grin.
The trolls guide the boats to the far side of the river and shortly you come upon a large cavern. There is a sandy beach with other boats made of stone. Not shaped as the Troll Boats but carved from the very stone of the area. They are large and would hold many goblins. They are too narrow for Trolls to use. A Dwarf would not fit in the boat’s narrow beam. At the stern of each boat is a large net on crane. There are two rows of 6 oar locks on the boats and a large Arbalest mounted on the bow. The Trolls land their boats just upstream of the Goblin Boats and William says, “We walk now. Bill, Tom, help Dwarves bury boats in sand. I scout ahead and find what goblins do.” He sinks into the sand and you can see a small ripple in the sand as he moves downstream under the bank.
The lads start digging eagerly, glad to exert their muscles. After the boats are buried a small mound of sand is left over the boats to enable the trolls to find them quickly if necessary. Tom skins and then fillets the fish into two large slabs. He cuts one slab into three pieces of equal weight and the other into four pieces of equal weight, he hands the four pieces to the Dwarves and says, ‘Cook if you must, Trolls eat fish raw.” Bill and Tom eat their fish.
William returns and while brushing the sand off his head he says, “City guarded by Rock Fiends. Very Dangerous, eat Rock Trolls, I captured a goblin squeaker. He say more Rock Fiends than two goblins have fingers and toes. Goblins no like Rock Fiends, help Dwarves and Rock Trolls kill nasty Rock Fiends. Rock Fiend Leader name Lord GRRR. Lord GRRR kill goblins with demon magic if they not obey Lord GRRR. I turn him loose to tell other goblins, Rock Trolls and Dwarves come in morning to fight Rock Fiend.”
Pigswill jumps up and yells, "Have at them!"
Gilfillan is more circumspect and wants to know if arrows can kill rock fiends.
Thgar & Yimhud chants "Kill the Rock Fiends! Smash em up! Beat em up! Turn em into dust!"
William says, "If goblin tells Rock Fiends that we will attack tomorrow as I expect the squeaker to do. They will not expect us to attack now. Arrows will kill Rock Fiends, swords, axes, Troll club all kill Rock Fiends. Must hit them many times to kill, they need only hit Rock Troll maybe two times, dwarves only once to kill. Keep distance shoot many arrows. Rock Troll throw big boulders, squash Rock Fiends. Dwarves shoot arrows. We hold to this plan, maybe Goblins attack Rock Fiends and help us. Maybe Goblins hide until fight over and then they celebrate victory with whoever wins. Only time will tell. But we go now.
Using the bridge for cover, the Rock Trolls and Dwarves begin their attack. Two Rock Fiends guard the city gate. The trolls make boulders from rock along the stream shore. Pigswill fires his crossbow - Gilfillan fires his crossbow; – The Rock Fiend on the right falls to the ground. The Rock Trolls throw their boulders and squash the Rock Fiend on the left.
Pigswill looks at Gilfillan in awe and asks “Are you willing to put down sick pigs when we get back home?”
Five young goblins appear in the opening in the city walls. The begin stripping the Rock Fiend on the right of his weapons and armor. One goblin finds a pouch and after looking inside begins jumping and spinning around waving the pouch. The four goblins try to move the boulders off the Rock Fiend on the left but are unable to move them. Six more goblins appear and march out of the city towards the bridge. These Goblins (Combat Adds 45/52) are wearing Ring Mail Armor (12 PP), Short Swords (3d6) and Self Bows (4d6) 24 Arrows each. The Leader softly says, “Squad Halt, Present Arms. Welcome to Eel Stream Goblin City. I am Captain Striker and these are what is left of the City Guard. When the squeaker you caught informed us of your intentions to attack the Rock Fiends we gathered all the mead we could and presented it to the Rock Fiends, it was sweetened with a sleeping potion and there are nineteen Rock Fiends sleeping in the Great Hall. When our watchers on the walls saw you approaching tonight we gathered the Guard to greet you. We will lead you to the Great Hall.”
Pigswill gives a smart salute and on 'oink' and sets out for the great hall. He asks what is in the pouch that caused the fuss for the finder.
Captain Striker replies, "I do not know. Sgt. send one goblin to find that squeaker who took the pouch off the Rock Fiend. Have him find out what is in it and report back to me."
The Sgt. picks out a goblin and says, "You heard the Captain, get a move on it maggot." The Goblin runs down a side street and is soon out of sight.
Captain Striker says, "There are so few goblins left in the city, Rock Fiends get very hungry, it will take only a few minutes to find the squeaker. If I remember correctly the squeaker we seek is the son of the goblin sent to obtain the information. He is just as likely to return with the pouch and its contents intact.”
Pigswill offers Captain Striker some pork scratchings from his supplies. They are not quite stale and still very flavoursome.
The Captain eats some pork scratchings and asks for more.
Pigswill hands over his last packet. He asks the Captain if he thinks most of his people would like them and suggest, if so, that they might set up a pork scratchings production and distribution business. Pigswill knows a very good centaur lawyer who could draft a partnership agreement.
The goblin sent to determine what was in the Rock Fiend's pouch returns with the pouch and kneels before the Captain and presents the pouch with both hands.
The Captain opens the pouch and looks inside. He begins jumping up and down and shouting for joy. As he regains his composure and stops jumping up and down shouting for joy. He says, "Goblins rejoice, the Holy Relics have been found." The Goblins begin shouting and jumping up and down. The Captain turns to Pigswill and says, "I regret that I cannot show you the contents of the bag but these Holy Relics will enable the goblins of this city to begin having squeakers again. We will be able to increase our population and once again be a living tribe. It is fortunate that a goblin found this pouch for any non-goblin to look upon these Holy Relics would cause a horrible death by fire. The Rock Trolls and Rock Fiends do not burn so they would be unaffected by the relics.
The noise of the jubilant goblins awaken the Rock Fiends who begin to exit the great hall. They are about fifty feet away and seeing Rock Trolls and Dwarves in the city immediately attack. The nineteen Rock Fiends cast TTYF Spells- three goblins are hit by the TTYF spells while the rest of the Rock Fiends create a beautiful fireworks display that causes no damage.
You are facing 19 Rock Fiends, each has cast a TTYF at the goblins, trolls and dwarves, only three goblins were hit by the spells for minor damage (less than 20 points of damage) and 18 of the Rock Fiends are now setting tridents and forming an arc in front of the 19th Rock Fiend, who is barking orders, "Prepare to repel their charge, Shield wall, set tridents! Hold the line. Steady now!
Goblins, Trolls, and Dwarves Attack the Rock Fiends. The Rock Trolls throw boulders into the shield wall, killing three Rock Fiends; one is their leader. The Goblins clash their short swords against their shields and yell insults at the Rock Fiends concerning the honor of their families and status of their birth. The Dwarves fire cross bows resulting in two dead Rock Fiends and two wounded with one running away.
The Rock Fiends reform their shield wall no realizing that their leader is beneath a large boulder breathing his last breath. Receiving no orders they remain ready for a charge that never came. For the Rock Trolls throw three more boulders smashing the three Rock Fiends in the center of the shield wall. The Dwarves fire their cross bows killing two more and wounding two more leaving five Rock Fiends who now see their leader’s feet sticking out from under the large boulder. They jump up and run down a road leading to the wall. And from there they reach the front gate.
While the goblins are celebrating the victory against the Rock Fiends you hear from behind you a -voice speaking Dwarven, "Hail and Well Met Friends of the Blue Sapphire Dwarves, We met five Rock Fiends running out the gate, we killed them before they could reach the bridge. I am Captain Tul Dar of the Blue Sapphire Dwarves. I have come here to negotiate a treaty with the Goblins of this City on behalf of King Buckles. I am at your service."
As you turn to face them you see a dwarf in red robes, a Mithril staff in his right hand. He is wearing Mithril Dwarven Ring Mail with no helm. His white hair and beard identifies him as one of the Old Ones and covering his right ear is a braid of his white hair reaching to his belt. In his left hand is a Mithril Dwarven Spike Shield.
Behind him are nine Dwarven Warriors, all in Dwarven Ring Mail and carrying Broad Axes and Dwarven Spiked Shields. The Dwarf leading the column of warriors is an old, heavy set dwarf with a patch over his left eye. The other eight warriors have tridents strapped to their backs. When Captain Tul Dar stops moving, the old dwarf with the eye patch shouts, "Platoon Halt!" With a stomp of each foot and a click of their heels and a simultaneous shout, "Yes, Sargent" the platoon comes to a smart stop.
The Goblin City by the Eel Stream
It is inhabited by seventy-seven goblins, twenty Rock Fiends and ruled by a Rock Fiend named GRRR, he is called Lord GRRR by his subject goblins. The twenty Rock Fiends call him GRRR. Two Rock Fiends guard the city gate.
