I have a character playing a fairy at the mo in my campaign. They seem to spend the whole time flying which thus makes them invulnerable in battle as all the seem to do is hover above everyone and fire their bow lol.
What rules does anyone have for fairies...?

For faeries who wan to help in melee I make tem toss their dice in with eveone else, and take their share of lumps. They can snipe at monsters that have not yet joied melee, but once the monsters are in melee I give missile fire into the melee a fifty-fifty of hitting friend or foe.
Flying monsters, strong gusts of wind, thick hanging spiderwebs, area attacks such as breath weapons or spells also come in handy. Giant toads who view faeries as food and prety much ignore larger delvers are good for a laugh.
The best anti-fairy moment from one of my games was when an uruk armed with a blunderbuss decided it would be most effective if he ignored his friends in melee and let fly at the fairy...
Fairy arrows are retty much useless without poison, and poison gets expensive...

I don't let them fly out of harms way to fire. They have to take hits, like hrrrogthgarrr says. If they want to fly away and snipe from afar, they risk hitting allies by doing so. Because their buddies are in the midst of melee and sudden moves could easily put one of them into the path of that fairy arrow. Personally, I would just disallow it for that very reason. But, if they insisted, I'd make them make an SR just to avoid hitting an ally, and to make things even more difficult, an SR from the ally to avoid the shot. Once they hit their buddy once, that will be the end of that. On occasion, it could be useful, especially if the Fairy is in a weakened state or something.

As long as they are not shooting into a tightly packed melee sniping is a good fairy tactic. Most simply can not take direct melee combat for the first few levels. One good hit and "Splat" no more fairy. In the games I've run or run in the problem has been more on the difficulty of keeping a fairy alive not any kind of combat supremacy they possessed. Here is a link to another thread on the board dealing with fairies and their advantages and disadvantages. trollbridge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=classes&action=display&thread=552P.S. If you want to take down a annoying fairy I have one word for you "Spiders" a few webs at the right height or simply one of the variety of spiders that prey on birds and grisly fairy death are quick to follow.

If they generate damage by melee, they are in melee; in melee you take your share of damage.
If not in melee, I use the same missile rules as always... and they can be hit with missiles as normal (albeit, hard to hit for being a fairy). Of course, most fairy don't have enough strength to make most missiles work....

What Wil just said.
On the other hand, I've realized something I should use more is environmental hazards. Have some hot steam and other environment in the combat, it sure perks it up a bit!

And I've just noticed that that link was posted in the other thread that TKD linked to. I'm only about a week behind...

I don't let the wee folk use weapons, armour or otherwise damage things physically - they're just too small - unless they sneak up on a sleeping baddie and stick something pointy in its ear.
And if you tread on one, they're dead. :-)
