Oh, yeah it's much more likely I'm just doing that very human thing of pattern spotting.

Deeper Delvings has moved! Posterous, the engine behind the blog, is shutting down and demolishing the old grey site. I migrated all the content over to The Deep Six Delver. [Those are my Flying Buffalo "death dice" in the header.] Handling the old memories in transit prompted me to update the blog again, and I have posted a couple T&T play reports since the site moved. The latest post went up tonight, on the topic of delver dog food.

Awesome news that we have new deeper Delvings to read and that they have been preserved for us trolls. Thank you Gaptooth!

Tonight, the stars aligned for a new post on my trollblog, in which I consider a method to reduce the number crunching without breaking the game. What do you think? Apart from the alternate advancement scheme of 7th edition/Deluxe, and the idea of minimum ability scores for weapons and spells, did I miss anything that would matter in actual play?

I found a problem with the way I was using Combat Adds that wouldn't work, so I fixed that in the post above. I also added a quick conversion chart to translate classic T&T attributes to the "Reduced" format. This was mainly to make it possible to make sense of the weapons and spells that require minimum ratings in certain abilities.

I made a suggestion to "The Fellowship" when I got the first draft of the dT&T rules that they should rething Saving Roll levels as the starting amount and levels are not intuitive and need a bit too much maths and remembering for someone new to T&T. Level 0 - Just not a fumble. Level 1 - 10 Level 2 - 20 Level 3 - 30 Level 4 - 40 ... What's a Level 13 Saving Roll? Kinda seemed reasonable to me. I thought it was a lot neater and easier to explain. In group play "Everybody make a Saving Roll, anything but a fumble!" comes up quite frequently. And I shoulda said - Interesting take, thanks for publishing/sharing.

dekh, that would be a fairly logical set of changes, in my opinion. The major downside, of course, is that it would make the new edition's Saving Rolls somewhat incompatible with the earlier versions. Under your system, a 9th level SR would need to beat a total of 90, whereas under 5th edition, only 60 is required. Not an insurmountable problem, but it would require adjustments to any earlier edition's solos and GM dungeons.
I suspect that there would be other flow-on effects, although I haven't given the matter a great deal of thought. It would seem to make things somewhat easier earlier on, and harder at higher levels. This is not an entirely bad thing...
gaptooth, your alternate system looks quite workable on first glance. Overall, though, it changes things sufficiently, to my mind at least, that it's barely recognisable as T & T. Yes, it looks like you could convert between the two easily enough, but I think that it would be a conversion rather than a few adjustments. It is an interesting concept to play with.

dekh, I think your SR levels are perfectly reasonable, but the classic SR levels never bothered me. As long as they can be computed using a simple formula, I'm okay. As for 13th-level rolls, I never used them! If something that high came up in the ordinary course of play, I think I could be forgiven for taking a second to multiply the SR level x5 and add 15. I also never use "Level 0" rolls. I used too, but after reading a comment here by Quoghmyre or Machfront (I think) some years ago I stopped. If the challenge isn't grave enough to warrant a Level 1 roll, why roll at all? I just let them succeed at such things and move on. In my adventures, there is enough peril to kill them many times over already, and the players have a way of amplifying it!

mahrundl, thanks for the feedback! My goal was a hack that could be applied to T&T without taking apart and reconstructing every part of the game, but you're right. Moreover, playing with it has given me the bug to expand on this and see if it can stand on its own. I've been working on it a lot as I wait for my copy of Deluxe to arrive, and I may have something to share before it gets here.
