I played two adventures yesterday that were both great fun!
The first was the solo, Goblin Lake. I rolled up a doubty Hobbit thief/rogue (not the sorcerer type rougue) for the adventure. I named him Bertin Umbertree (my Dad said he once thought Umbertree would be a good Hobbit last name...so I named Bert in honor of my Pop). And in honor of another Hobbit who once skittered down a hole...there's that too. So, here's a brief recap of the adventure: Bert happened upon a Goblin party making their way through the forest. And being very sneaky and curious as Hobbits can be, he skulked after them. Finally the goblins came to a small cave entrance and entered. Bert thought, what the heck, why not and went in after them. It was a tight squeeze even for a Hobbit! But Bert managed to make his way through. It was very dark but Bert thought it best to not light a torch. He lost the trail of the Goblins...but he made his way down a winding path and finally came to a lake. Suddenly a Goblin guard appeared and confronted him in Goblin speech. Thankfully, Bert was fully conversant in Goblin (not sure how...but Hobbits are amazing people aren't they?) and he was able to translate the Guard's command. The Guard said something like "What are you doing here? Only Goblin folk are allowed down here. You will need to leave or else!". But good ol' Bert possessed quite a silver tongue which had served him well in the past. So, he tried to persuade the Goblin guard to allow him passage and assure him that he was no threat. The Goblin guard just scratched his chin for a moment clearly considering the strange outworlders' words. But then the the guards features screwed up into a threatening menace and he barked an ultimatum at Bert to leave right now or it would be his demise. "Rat dung!" Bert thought, "Oh well. That didn't work". In a move that was perhaps brave and definitely fool hardy, Bert decided to draw his sax blade, and charged the guard and the other goblins that were along the shore. Amazingly, this surprise move shocked the Goblins and they fled before Bert, diving into the lake. Bert stood there amazed! Wow! It worked! Bert thought it best to not press his luck too far and he scampered off. He came upon a small crevice which Bert felt was a good way to follow. It turned out to be a Goblin refuse pile. Ew! But Bert's intuition told him it might be worth going through. So, using handholds he made his way down into the pile. What a slimy, stinking mess it was! There were fish guts and other unmentionables. But Bert persevered and pinching his nose he began to go through the pile. And just when he thought he had engaged in a total, disgusting waste of time he came upon a small pouch full of tiny diamonds! Huzzah! What a find! Satisfied with his booty, Bert began to climb back up which turned out to be MUCH more difficult than it was climbing down. But through a combination of Hobbit adroitness and just pure luck, and a few slips here and there, Bert made it back up to the top! Hurray! But then Bert could hear the Goblins regrouping (added for narrative effect...not actually in the adventure) and they were clearly searching for him and getting close. Having no where else to turn, Bert slipped as quietly as he could into the lake hoping to find a way out. Oh bats wings! The water was cold, he thought! But Bert toughened up and swam out to what he thought might be the other shore. Suddenly, a large whirl pool engulfed him! The vortex of water drug him under the lake! Bert struggled as the vortex pullled him into an under water cave. Bert was battered from being thrown against a few rocks, but with the exception of a few bruises was ok. He pulled himself ashore and dragging himself up, sopping wet, he stumbled up a new path. Which amazingly led back eventually outdoors. Bert had gone down a Goblin hole, got a nice reward, and lived to adventure another day!
But this was not the end of Bert's adventures. He would soon meet a group of friendly and stalwart adventurers at a pub in a town a couple days walk away. And they would end up delving into a fortress filled with Kobolds. But that is another story.
