DELVE 14.
BEAST-LANDS DOUBLE-TRAGEDY STUNS DELVING COMMUNITY
Saturday 18th July 2020.
Campaign year: Spring 502.
Online, ca. 1.00 pm – 5.00 pm.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: NIKOLAI (Glyn) 2nd level healer; DENA (Pippy) 2nd level wizard.
Locations: Blessed Springs; Farmlands; Caran Baru; Fort Mereth; Disaster Bay; Fort Estgard; Nerech.
NIKOLAI and DENA were in the town of Blessed Springs. After being restored to life from their essential salts, they had no equipment. Borrowing money from KANDI, they purchased some essential supplies and travelled though the Farmlands to Caran Baru; at the market there they re-equipped themselves and set out towards Fort Mereth, on the great wall between Sokara and Nerech.
At the Fort, they spoke with the guards and then headed north to Disaster Bay. At the Bay they spoke with the fishermen and declined the offer of ship passage to the far northern city of Yarimura. Returning to the wall, they learned of a potential quest at Fort Estgard. At that Fort, the captain of the guards told them that his daughter had been kidnapped by the beast-men of Nerech. The delvers left through the north gate into the land of the beast-men, as the local priest of Nagil offered them the last rites.
Commentary: Nagil is the sombre god of death and the underworld. Nerech is a wild land inhabited by monstrous beasts, on the other side of a great wall running from sea to sea.
In the stony land of Nerech, NIKOLAI and DENA saw a far hill, which they journeyed towards. On the way they fought and defeated one of the beast-men, who dissolved into a mist on death leaving behind a beast-helm. At that point, dozens more of the beast-men appeared on the brow of the hill. NIKOLAI put on the beast-helm, which began to control his mind, driving tentacles into his skull.
DENA used magic to try drive back the beast-men, which was only partially successful. In the few extra moments, she tried magic again to help remove the helm – the spell worked to an extent, but DENA was sadly killed by the exertion of the spell. NIKOLAI tried once more to remove the beast-helm but did not succeed. He lost his mind and was sadly transformed into a beast-man.

DELVE 15.
DELVERS DEFECT TO ROYALIST CAUSE, TAKE ON NEW QUESTS
Thursday 23rd July 2020.
Campaign year: Mid-spring 502.
Online, ca. 8.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; THADDEUS (Leon) 1st level wizard.
Locations: Blessed Springs; Coldbleak Mountains; Caran Baru; Trefoille; Yellowport.
At Blessed Springs, BARTON & KANDI received two local fellows, PATTI & THADDEUS, who both had a strange dream about two adventurers who were slain by beasts in the land of Nerech. They realised this meant that their former colleagues NIKOLAI and DENA were not coming back from the trip to the north lands. They visited the alchemist’s shop in Blessed Springs, and spoke to the proprietor, buying some potions from him; KANDI also left her horse-and-cart with him for safe-keeping. The alchemist offered to buy KANDI’s beast-helmet, but she refused.
Commentary: This was the beast-helmet KANDI found by the roadside in northern Sokara, and was of the same type that transformed NIKOLAI into a beast-man (an important detail for later delves).
They then journeyed into the high Coldbleak Mountains, where they came across sentries of the rebel camp. Blindfolded, they were led to the rebel base where the heir to the throne, Nergan Corin, accepted their offer of service and quested them to assassinate the Provost-Marshal of Yellowport, Marley Marlock.
Commentary: Prince Nergan was the heir to old throne of Sokara and his dynasty was deposed by the current Protector-General Grieve Marlock. He and his loyalist rebels are hiding out in a secret camp in the hills above Blessed Springs.
They then left the mountains and travelled to Caran Baru, where they bought weapons, supplies and other items to help their quest. KANDI freed a dwarf slave, but it fled beneath the earth. In that town, BARTON joined the temple of the Three Fortunes and (along with KANDI) received their blessing. They left Caran Baru by road and journeyed south to Yellowport by road.
They passed through the town of Trefoille where they met a man with a large bottle of yellow dust, which the delvers bought from him. At Yellowport, KANDI joined the temple of Maka. The delvers spoke to the priests of Alvir & Valmir and received a quest to recover their golden net, stolen by the fish men. They then checked-in to the Gold Dust tavern, and made plans for their strike on the office of the Provost-Marshal.
That was delve #15, somewhat of an admin session, but one where we welcomed new delver Leon.

DELVE 16.
WIZARD FOUND IN JAR, BOX-THEFT DRAGON FURY
Thursday 6th August 2020.
Campaign year: Early summer 502.
Online, ca. 7.00 pm – 11.00 pm.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; THADDEUS (Leon) 1st level wizard.
Locations: Yellowport; Venefax; Blessed Springs; Lake of the Sea Dragon; Trefoille; Yellowport.
From the city of Yellowport, KANDI, THADDEUS & PATTI travelled north-east along the coast road. BARTON had to stay behind, as he had been called-up for jury service. The arrived in Venefax and stayed overnight at the Scorpion’s Sting tavern. The spoke to some pilgrims who had come to see the former lair of the evil Gob-Gobbler.
Leaving Venefax, they continued north to Blessed Springs. KANDI attempted to recover her horse & cart from the alchemist of Blessed Springs. The crooked alchemist denied all knowledge of her wagon, but after some violent persuasion revealed that he’d sold it to a merchant a few weeks ago. The alchemist offered them some potions as compensation.
KANDI then visited the healing Springs themselves, and poured her jar of yellow powders into the water. This restored to life the magician Oliphaunt the Wizardly, who had been in the jar for more than 10 years. He used to live in a tower in Trefoille; KANDI broke the news of that town’s destruction to Oliphaunt in a rather blunt manner. Oliphaunt asked the delvers to recover his magic box from the lair of the Sea Dragon and meet him back in Trefoille; he gave them each a dragon amulet as protection.
The delvers then left Blessed Springs and travelled overland to the shores of the Lake of the Sea Dragon. At the town of Cadmium, on the shore of the lake, the delvers spoke to the silver merchant and swapped two of the dragon amulets for a nugget. They then hired a boat at sailed out onto the water, trying to find the island with the dragon’s cave, but they soon met the Sea Dragon instead. The placated the dragon with the silver nugget and then followed him under the water to his lair, where they hid among the piles of treasure. The dragon eventually swam away, and they located Oliphaunt’s box.
PATTI climbed up the cave wall to the sinkhole in the roof and let down a rope, which the others tied around the box. KANDI and THADDEUS ascended the rope, but THADDEUS was too slow and was still climbing when the dragon came back. PATTI threw down the last dragon amulet, which THADDEUS caught and used to save himself from the dragon’s poisoned breath.
Hidden by the cloud of dragon-gas, they escaped through the sinkhole, pulling the box after them. Back on the surface, they were marooned on an island, but flagged down a passing fishermen who took them back to the far shore. They did not stay long in Cadmium and journeyed west to the main road.
Heading south by the road, the delvers reached Trefoille, where they located Oliphaunt. Oliphaunt had set up a red pavilion over the ruin of his tower; he was overjoyed for the return of his box. He told them that the crypt under his tower, which contained much strong magic, was locked – he thought he had lent the key to a fellow wizard in Yellowport. The delvers agreed to get it back for him and heading to the nearby city.
They were buying gear at Yellowport market when Laura, a professional burglar, overheard them talking about the wizard. She offered to show them where the house was and help them rob it, so they might avoid the magical trap laid upon it.
That was a pretty exciting delve #16. Next time: breaking-and-entering.

DELVE 17.
ROBBERY SHOCKS YELLOWPORT, PERPETRATORS IN ROOFTOP CHASE
Monday 10th August 2020.
Campaign year: Early summer 502.
Online, ca. 8.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior.
Locations: Yellowport; Trefoille; Metriciens; Knucklebones Point.
The delvers were re-joined by their ally BARTON, but THADDEUS was detained by a request from a fellow wizard to help with some astronomical experiments.
The delvers spent some time drinking in the Gold Dust tavern, speaking to Mad Bob and his wife. There they also met a strange warrior called FERDINAND, but he did not stay with them long; he was performing a quest for his mother-in-law.
BARTON, KANDI & PATTI then met with Laura in a courtyard near the house of the wizard – Talanexor the Fireweaver. They crept through the fog, keeping out of sight from potential witnesses. With the others on watch, PATTI opened the ground-floor window using her thieves’ tools. Inside the house, Laura went upstairs (so she claimed) to disarm a magic trap; the others were directed to stay on the ground floor and look for a secret panel. KANDI found nothing; and BARTON knocked over a standing lamp; but PATTI found the panel. Behind it was a green key, monogrammed with the sigil of Oliphaunt the Wizardly.
They had not heard from Laura upstairs for some time; KANDI went up to investigate, and found that she had escaped out of an upstairs window with the wizard’s treasure, and had raised the alarm against the delvers. At that moment, the militia and the fire wizard arrived at the front door.
BARTON attempted to cast his flash powder at the watchmen, but it failed to ignite (probably spoiled by the fog-damp). The two delvers instead ran upstairs to escape, and along with KANDI fled out of the window onto the roof.
Commentary: BARTON fumbled his (IIRC) DEX Savinf Roll to cast the flash powder successfully.
Passing over the city roof-tops, they evaded the guards and hid in a rubbish-strewn alley. There KANDI & BARTON both applied a disguise; and PATTI removed her face-mask. Their identities thus changed, the delvers bluffed their way out of the city through the postern gate and headed through the night along the road to the ruined town of Trefoille.
When dawn came, they breakfasted by the roadside, then returned to see Oliphaunt at his pavilion. Using Oliphaunt’s key they entered his crypt and looked into three magic mirrors, each of which showed the reflection of a distant part of the Fabled Realm. Pausing to leave with Oliphaunt a message for their friends, they stepped though the mirror leading to the city of Metriciens in Golnir.
The delvers arrived by this magic before the gates of the great merchant-city of Metriciens on the Golnir coast. At the Counting House tavern, they learned of the nature of the realm and its surrounding lands: of trading with the dwarfs; of the blue men of Uttaku; and of the ancient rule of the High King.
KANDI booked in at the inn and retired to her chambers; but BARTON and PATTI travelled west along the coast road to explore Golnir further. They met and spoke with a party of militiamen and spotted an old, ruined fort. They headed down a cliff-path to the water’s edge and spoke to the local fishermen, who told them the story of a sunken town out in the depths, from which music can still be heard at low tide.
Further along the beach, they were taken by surprise and fought against a marauding hippocampus or kelpie in the shallows. The fishermen were not impressed that the delvers had killed the sea-monster, so PATTI & BARTON quickly left and made camp back up on the coastal road overlooking the cliffs.
That was the end of a packed delve #17.

You experienced it and still read it before bed? Props to the GM and players for not making the game so harrowing that it was nightmare-inducing... (All of us who played mostly T&T solos are especially amazed) There were portions that were nightmare inducing but on the whole this campaign has been a lot of (drunken) fun! Even the TPKs and semi-malicious stripping of all our gear has not stopped this being worth re-living every night!! Long may it continue! These early delves have been much more action packed than I remember. I was expecting to have several months worth of “admin sessions” to read through; where we walk around burning provisions and trying to find cash. In my memory there was a big gap between adventures with the Sea Dragon and meeting Marley Marlock…

DELVE 18.
ROYAL VISIT LEADS TO PERILOUS QUESTS
Monday 17th August 2020.
Campaign year: Midsummer 502.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior; FERDINAND (Pippy) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Yellowport; Metriciens; Ringhorn; Castle Ravayne.
New delver FERDINAND was in Yellowport, and had heard from his friends in the city that the other delvers had left town and were last seen heading towards Trefoille. He followed them and, arriving in Trefoille, received from Oliphaunt the Wizardly a letter from his friends. He used Oliphaunt’s portals to follow them to the Golnirean city of Metriciens.
BARTON & PATTI were camping out on the Metriciens–Ringhorn road, and rose one summer morning to head back to the former city. A few days later, while they were recovering in the Counting House tavern, the magically transported FERDINAND appeared out of nowhere, causing much consternation. They heard a rumour of a fabulous jewel, kept on board a foreign galleon in Metriciens harbour.
Together, the three delvers headed west along the coast road, meeting and speaking with a patrol of militia. They investigated a ruin from the lost days of the Uttakin Empire. In the crypt below they opened a door emblazoned with the symbol of the spider, and found a copper chest full of coins and jewels. They left the tower and continued west, meeting another militia patrol; this time led by a Knight of Golnir.
They made it to Ringhorn without encountering any bandits and spent their money on new equipment. PATTI was initiated into the temple of Sig. From Ringhorn, they headed north along the road. The delvers arrived at Castle Ravayne, the seat of House Ravayne, led by the Baroness Vanna. BARTON managed to convince the guards to let them into the outer keep by explaining that the other two were his servants.
Commentary: The long road between Ringhorn and Metriciens is notorious for bandits, and is patrolled by militia in the pay of both Castle Ravyane and of the merchant guilds. Castle Rayvane is the ruling seat of the Baroness Vanna of Golnir.
In the outer keep, FERDINAND visited a shrine and joined the cult of Tyrnai; then conducted some sparring with the local knights. The delvers then dressed in their fine clothing and attempted to enter in the inner keep, but were arrested by the guards and thrown into the moat (ruining their new clothing). BARTON (with his blessing of fortune) noticed a Sokaran nobleman at a high window, who recognised them as fellow countryfolk, and invited them in to the inner keep.
There, they spoke with the priest of Elnir and each took the blessing of that god. They also met with the court wizard Estragon, who tasked them to find him an amulet. Sir Debrumas showed them in to an audience with the Baroness, who gave them the quest to slay the dragon of the Haunted Hills. They were then escorted from the inner keep.
Lots of new quest potential in delve #18. Which will the delvers go for first?

DELVE 19.
GOLNIR IS LOVELY THIS TIME OF YEAR
Thursday 20th August 2020.
Campaign year: Late summer 502.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior; FERDINAND (Pippy) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Yellowport; Trefoille; Metriciens; Ringhorn; Castle Ravayne; Chard’s Inn; Wheatfields; Troilus’ Inn; Metriciens again.
KANDI had been staying at the Gold Dust tavern in Yellowport since the start of the summer, and her friends (apart from Thaddeus) had all left town. She departed the city and travelled to Trefoille, where she visited Oliphaunt the Wizardly. The wizard gave KANDI a letter that the others had left with him. Reading the letter, KANDI entered the wizard’s crypt and passed though one of the magic mirrors to Golnir.
Arriving outside the city of Metriciens, she passed on and took the road to Ringhorn. On the way she met and spoke with two militia patrols, one commanded by a knight. At Ringhorn she took the northern road and as she approached Castle Ravayne she was spotted by the others from the towers and invited in to the inner keep. PATTI, BARTON & FERDINAND told KANDI of their quest to kill the dragon of the Haunted Hills.
They then left Castle Ravayne to travel along the northern roads of Golnir, passing through Chard’s Inn & Wheatfields. Leaving Wheatfields, they returned south, meeting a strange travelling minstrel called ‘Dom Daniel’, who presented them with a riddle; as well as a disgruntled troubadour with a broken cart. They passed though Troilus’ Inn and ended up at the gates of Metriciens.
Delve #19: A pleasant ramble along the highways and byways of Golnir. Not exactly the stuff of legends, but delving isn't always action-packed in the Fabled Lands! I'm sure things will pick up next time.

DELVE 20.
PRICELESS GEM NABBED IN SHIP HEIST, WATCH BAFFLED
Sunday 30th August 2020.
Campaign year: Early autumn 502.
Online, ca. 9.30 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: FERDINAND (Pippy) 1st level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue.
Locations: Metriciens.
Leaving Barton & Kandi outside the walls of Metriciens, FERDINAND & PATTI entered the city. They headed for the temple of the Three Fortunes, but heard a noise from the adjoining alley. A figure lay apparently wounded in the rubbish. Investigating, a white knotted net was cast over them, but they cast it off using the blessing of Sig and fought against two cultists, with white-painted faces and red-lined eyes. PATTI shot one with her longbow; FERDINAND almost decapitated the other with his maul. Severely wounded but victorious, they looted a bag of pearls and sold these to fund some healing at the temple of Nagil.
Commentary: The muggers were followers of the secret cannibal god Badogor, looking for something to put in their cooking pot.
They discussed with the gem merchant a fabulous jewel, the Heart of Harkun, kept on board of a foreign ship in the harbour. They learned that it was kept in the captain’s cabin; and of the captain’s taste for rum. They spoke with a band of thieves from the north of the mountains who had also come to steal the jewel. They stole from them a bottle of rum, which they planned to use to bribe the ship’s captain.
Posing as wealthy but eccentric Sokaran merchants, they paid a harbour pilot to row them out to the ship. Speaking through a hailing horn, they persuaded the captain to let them aboard (using the blessing of Elnir). At the captain’s table they dined then passed round the rum, which turned out to be laced with a sleeping draught. The captain succumbed, but PATTI and FERDINAND remained awake.
PATTI crept to the captain’s cabin and came back with the jewel. The alarm was raised; FERDINAND used the blessing of Tyrnai to punch a hole in the ship’s planks, allowing them to dive into the harbour and swim back to the pier. There they saw the northern thieves being placed in irons. They met with the jewel trader who had bought their bag of pearls, who offered them 17,000 gp (in gems) for the Heart of Harkun. They took this offer and sneaked out of the city before dawn, leaving it in uproar.
The excitement level certainly picked up for delve #20! Will the delvers get away with the robbery?!

DELVE 21.
ON THE RUN WITH SOME NUNS
Friday 4th September 2020.
Campaign year: Mid-autumn 502.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior; FERDINAND (Pippy) 1st level warrior.
Locations: Metriciens; Haggart’s Corner; Abbey of Lacuna; Bronze Hills; Caran Baru; Blessed Springs.
PATTI & FERDINAND had escaped Metriciens after selling the Heart of Harkun. The city was in chaos after the theft. They met back up with BARTON & KANDI, and spoke to a vagrant in the shadow of the city gates. They took the road to Haggart’s Corner, meeting the magical sending of Estragon en route, who asked them huffily why they hadn’t found his amulet yet.
Passing quickly through the Corner they headed north again and met a group of nuns from the Abbey of Lacuna. They travelled in the nuns’ company to the Abbey. Leaving the Abbey, they crossed the border into Sokara, skirted the Forest of Larun and crossed the Bronze Hills into Caran Baru where they spent much of their stolen wealth on weapons, armour & equipment. FERDINAND hired a mercenary retainer called Fabio.
Leaving Caran Baru they passed east to Blessed Springs, buying some potions from the alchemist there, and then checked-in to the Blessed Ale tavern.
That was delve #21. Apologies for the gap in posting over the last few days - some of the delvers were visiting here in Cambridge for an in-person real-life delve (and other activities)!

DELVE 22.
ZERO MERCY FROM HILL-COUNTRY DRAGON-SLAYERS
LOCAL GOBLIN: "IT DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE"
Monday 7th September 2020.
Campaign year: Mid-autumn 502.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 2nd level warrior; PATTI (Glyn) 1st level rogue; FERDINAND (Pippy) 1st level warrior; BARTON (Savage) 2nd level warrior.
Locations: Blessed Springs; Coldbleak Mountains; Bronze Hills; Rainbow Valley; Haunted Hills; Endless Plains; Wheatfields.
The delvers were called to a strange meeting in the Blessed Ale inn. It turned out to be with Royston, the deputy of the guard from Yellowport. He attempted to blackmail them for money & goods (he knew they had stolen the Heart and was threatening to dob them in), giving them until the end of the day to comply. Leaving FERDINAND’s hireling Fabio with some of their gems and instructing him to keep an eye on matters in the Springs, they rode in secret to the Coldbleak Mountains.
There, they met with Prince Nergan who agreed to send assassins to deal with Royston. The delvers then rode west, skirting the Forest of Larun & passing through the Bronze Hills. They took the ferry over the Grimm.
In the Rainbow Valley they met some travelling Knights of Nagil. They spoke to a hogwarden and BARTON bought from him a pig. They met some bandits in the Haunted Hills, who turned out to be friendly (although they stole 1 gem each from the delvers).
Commentary: Nagil is the god of the dead, and his sombre knights walk the countryside to convert others to his faith.
The bandits showed them to the cave of the dragon. The delvers drank many potions and applied poison to their weapons, then stitched together several nets. The dragon came out from its cave; KANDI cast the net over it and BARTON shot it with his poisoned crossbow. The dragon was mortally wounded; the other delvers stepped in to finish it off, with a very severe blow from FERDINAND. The dragon’s lair was empty of treasure.
The delvers then headed south over the Endless Plains; passing Molhern’s Smithy, where FERDINAND’s shield became enchanted. Arriving in Wheatfields they purchased healing at the temple of Nagil there.
Commentary: Molhern is the god of crafts and magic; Molhern's Smithy is an stone circle, where armour and weapons that get left overnight sometimes become mysteriously enchanted.
