DELVE 45.
STRANGE SPELLS IN SMOGMAW
Thursday 6th December 2020.
Campaign year: Mid-autumn 503.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 12.00 am.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: BARTON (Savage) 3rd level warrior; KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; SACHA (Pippy) 3rd level rogue.
Locations: Smogmaw.
In the jungle town of Smogmaw, KANDI & BARTON visited the market, where KANDI bought a parrot. They spoke to an old man walking in the mud, who told them a bit about the local area. They tried to find a shaman’s hut, and met the priest of Glimbinki (the Plumed One), who had lost his idol - he asked them to find it for him. They visited the Palm Tree tavern for cocktails. They then called in to see their friend Moon of Evening, and spent time with her family.
Also in Smogmaw, local wizard (and new delver) BEULAH was gathering herbs by the riverbank and saw a sorcerer reflected in the water. The sorcerer was an employee of the Arena of Khazan, using cross-dimensional magic to pass on the sad news about Ferdinand & Patti. He asked BEULAH to locate KANDI & BARTON and let them know. She found them in the Palm Tree and relayed the sorcerer’s message. They were asked to return to the water-side the following night.
They met the next night, along with BEULAH’s house-mate SACHA (our other new delver); he had been falsely accused of stealing the idol of Glimbinki. The remains & effects of Patti & Ferdinand (former colleagues slain in the Arena of Khazan) were relayed to them by magic, minus handling fees. The delvers then returned to their ship, ready to set sail with a cargo of spices.
Delve #45 saw the first proper exploration of Smogmaw, and we welcomed two new delvers to replace Ferdy & Patti.

DELVE 46.
SHIP UPGRADE
Tuesday 8th December 2020.
Campaign year: Mid-autumn 503.
Online, ca. 9.00 pm – 11.30 pm.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; SACHA (Pippy) 3rd level rogue.
Locations: Smogmaw; Violet Ocean; Scorpion Bight; Yellowport.
BARTON was ill with swamp fever, so stayed behind at the house of Moon of Evening. The other delvers visited the temple to the Three Fortunes, where they played cards with the priestess. SACHA & BEULAH won their hands, and SACHA joined the temple and received the blessing of fortune. The delvers then spoke to the priest of Alvir & Valmir, but declined to swim out to his temple on a sandbar in the river mouth.
They then went aboard their ship and set sail north. The delvers sailed through warm waters and in good weather. They declined to stop at the Island of Fire, even though the natives waved at them from the beach. They sailed on, meeting a ship from Akatsurai and exchanging pleasantries and trading tips. The grateful captain gifted them a golden katana.
Continuing north, KANDI was forced to have the quartermaster flogged for insubordination. That night he sneaked into KANDI’s cabin with a dagger, but she managed to subdue him and he was placed in irons. Reaching Scorpion Bight, they headed west and soon docked at Yellowport. The quartermaster was dismissed and handed over to the city guard. They found that security and intelligence services had increased their presence in the city since the assassination of the former provost-marshal.
Selling Ravayne’s Fury to a strange fellow from Conflass, the delvers bought a galleon, named Dragons’ Bane and expanded their crew. Filling their ship with minerals, they made ready to set sail once more.
Delve #46: The delvers have now joined the big-league of merchant adventurers, with a full-size galleon stocked with top-end cargo. How long can it last?

DELVE 47.
BEAST-LAND MERCY DASH
Saturday 12th December 2020.
Campaign year: Late autumn 503.
Online, late evening till around midnight.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; BARTON (Savage) 3rd level warrior; BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; SACHA (Pippy) 3rd level rogue.
Locations: Smogmaw; Violet Ocean; Yellowport; Fort Mereth; Fort Estgard; Nerech.
BARTON had been left behind in the town of Smogmaw. He took ship with their friend Moon of Evening and, after sailing north over the Violet Ocean, he was dropped off at Yellowport. There he met up with KANDI, BEULAH & SACHA and, leaving their ship in Yellowport, the four of them travelled north across Sokara. They visited the garrisons at Fort Mereth, then followed the wall south to Fort Estgard, where they crossed the border into the land of Nerech.
Commentary: There are three forts in north-eastern Sokara, linked by a great wall that seals off the peninsula of Nerech, where dwell the fearsome beast-men. The captain of one them had asked the delvers to rescue his daughter, kidnapped in a beast-raid.
On the wild moorland of Nerech, the delvers fought off an attack from the ravenous beast-men. No sooner than these foes were vanquished a far greater horde of beast-men appeared on the horizon.
The delvers then put on the beast-mens’ helms, disguising themselves in the eyes of the beasts. BEULAH suffered an adverse reaction to the helm, as it drove tendrils into her head! She attempted to prevent this using magic, but the spell broke her wizard's staff instead. KANDI tore the helmet off the unfortunate wizard, causing severe injuries. BARTON gave BEULAH his enchanted crossbow, and using its magic she flew across the moorlands back to Fort Estgard.
Commentary: BEU rolled a 3 on her spell Saving Roll, but was saved from negative consequences by the breaking of her (ordinary) staff. The delvers had gained the crossbow of levitating from the Arena of Khazan solo.
The remaining delvers followed the beast-men to their lair, where they found a sorceress and a cage full of Sokaran prisoners, among them the daughter of the captain of Fort Estgard. They were to be converted by wicked magic into half-beasts!
KANDI & BARTON took on the sorceress in combat; while SACHA freed the prisoners by dissolving the lock of their prison with acid. The sorceress was defeated, and found to be carrying the seal of the Black Pagoda. On her death, the beast-men were disconcerted and confused. Soon after BEULAH returned with a patrol of guards from Estgard and together they escorted the prisoners back to the fort, reuniting the captain with his missing daughter.
Thst was a pretty exciting delve #47, with the party nearly losing another member. The significance of the Black Seal has yet to be discovered by the delvers.

No doubt the Black Seal is sat at the bottom of the ocean somewhere. Many of our attempts to become merchant sailors ended in shipwreck and despair. Many a magic item or quest item lies in the crushing deep.

DELVE 48.
INTO THE FORBIDDEN FOREST
Thursday 17th December 2020.
Campaign year: Late autumn 503.
Online, late evening till around midnight.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 4th level warrior; BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; SACHA (Pippy) 3rd level rogue.
Locations: Fort Estgard; Caran Baru; Trefoille; Yellowport; Sokaran waters; Marlock City; River of Souls; Abbey of Lacuna; Forest of the Forsaken.
Departing Fort Estgard, KANDI, SACHA & BEULAH travelled by road to Caran Baru. They left Barton behind, as we wished to spend some time with his friends who were guarding the wall. At Caran Baru SACHA bought a fine hackbut from one the city’s gunsmiths.
After a short stay in the garrison town, the delvers headed south along the main road to Trefoille and Yellowport. Going aboard ship, they set sail and travelled to Marlock City; a risky venture made without any blessings of the gods.
En route they found a mysterious metal ship wrecked in the sea and retrieved a ray-gun from its occupant. At Marlock City, they sold their ship’s cargo and hired an apothecary to restore BEULAH’s health after the incident in Nerech.
Leaving Marlock City behind, the delvers travelled north along the River of Souls and visited the abbey of Lacuna. From there they travelled into the dark and gnarly Forest of the Forsaken. After speaking with the inmates of a leper colony on the Forest’s edge; they soon headed deep into the gloom. KANDI fought a duel with an elfin knight that disputed the road.
Later they found the Tower of Despair. Bypassing its guardian wolf with BEULAH’s magic, the delvers stole it’s ancient treasure and were pursued from the premises by a horde of vampires. In the pursuit KANDI became separated from the others.
Delve #48: The Forbidden Forest is one of the most dangerous areas of the Fabled Lands. Hopefully the delvers will be able to make it out safely. Also, I don't think Sacha ever managed to fire the new hackbut.

DELVE 49.
Sunday 20th December 2020.
Campaign year: Early winter 503.
Online, late evening till around midnight.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; SACHA (Pippy) 3rd level rogue.
Locations: Forest of the Forsaken; Conflass; Marlock City; Shadar Tor; Trefoille.
Still travelling the twisting paths of the Forest of the Forsaken, BEULAH & SACHA found a talking severed head, which asked them to return it to its friend Knobbler the hermit. The delvers found Knobbler and handed over the head. They spoke for a while about the nature of the Forest.
Later the delvers entered the crypt of a vampire knight, who asked them to bring him the Key of Stars. Leaving the forest the delvers travelled south overland to Conflass where they took barges to Marlock City.
After a short break in Marlock, the delvers travelled to the Shadar Tor, visiting a refugee camp on the way. Deciphering the runes on the Tor, BEULAH learned the spell of water breathing. They then departed the Tor and travelled on to through Trefoille to Yellowport.
Renting a room in a tavern, they performed a magical ritual to sew the chameleon cloak, which BEULAH presented to SACHA. They then sent a message by carrier pigeon to Barton at Fort Estgard.
Delve #49 was a bit of a mixed bag, with quite a lot of little events. Most significant was the magic item creation of the chameleon cloak, which the delvers will end up using a lot in their adventures.

DELVE 50.
HOLY MAIL NABBED FROM WAR-GOD TEMPLE
Tuesday 22nd December 2020.
Campaign year: Early winter 503.
Online, late evening till around midnight.
GM: Schmee.
Delvers: KANDI (Scally) 3rd level warrior; BARTON (Savage) 3rd level warrior; BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; SACHA (Pippy) 3rd level rogue.
Locations: Forest of the Forsaken/Fort Estgard/Yellowport; Caran Baru; Marlock City.
In the Forest of the Forsaken, KANDI fought her way out, after fighting with a band of kobold bandits, and headed east. BARTON left Fort Estgard and headed west on foot. BEULAH & SACHA left Yellowport, travelling north by road.
They all met in Caran Baru where they planned to steal a suit of holy chainmail from the temple of Tyrnai. KANDI & BARTON reconnoitred the temple, posing as new worshippers. Each took the sacrament of Tyrnai and received his blessing.
That night SACHA sneaked in through an open window. (BEULAH waited outside, disguised as a beggar.) SACHA dodged tripwires found the mail adorning the statue of the god, but was skewered by a spear trap. This triggered the guardian golems from the temple front; and the temple alarm brought the warrior priests. The delvers escaped and fled town.
Travelling overland they made it south to Marlock City, where they handed over the mail to the priests of Sig and were rewarded.
Delve #50: A half-century of delving and a Fritz Leiber/Lankhmar-style caper. Excellent stuff!

DELVE 51.
DEMONIC POSSESSION IN YELLOWPORT
Saturday 26th December 2020.
Campaign year: Early winter 503.
Online, late evening till around midnight.
GM: Pippy.
Delvers: HEIDI (Jo) 3rd level healer; BARTON (Savage) 3rd level warrior; BEULAH (Glyn) 3rd level wizard; GIOVANNI (Schmee) 2nd level healer.
Locations: Yellowport.
The delvers were in Yellowport; they became friends with HEIDI and GIOVANNI. Together, they pursued a quest to deal with “a mortally odious domestic matter”; Reuben Carrack, the son of a wealthy merchant, had been possessed by an Ankonese demon spirit. Handsome reward was promised for the boy's deliverance.
The delvers made several inquiries within the household, at local temples, at Mr Carrack's dockside warehouses. They spent time and gold researching various topics in the library at the Temple of Elnir.
They learned of Ankonese folklore, the rituals of exorcism and gained pharmacological knowledge which to help safeguard the welfare of the boy.
They learned the name of the demon ‘Oknblisi’ when BARTON solved a gruesome puzzle; to banish a malevolent spirit, one must first know its name.
Delve #51 began the second half-century of delving with Pippy as GM and his scenario with more than a hint of Call of Cthulhu. We also welcomed new delver Jo as HEIDI & and saw the return of my delver GIOVANNI (last seen in Delve #38).

On the journey along the Stinking River they were attacked by esturine dire rats and a brimstone golem. After defeating the golem they collected brimstone in order to silence the demon.
