Have you read the two-part story of 'Figg's Tail' also in the Hobbit Hole? It's the 'tale' of a buch of delvers venturing into the same dungeon. Might be useful?

players are currently bogged down in debating with snivler what he is doing down in the cellars, with him denying and lying about everything they bring up (of course). i'm finding it amusing, but they are starting to get annoyed with him, i think. ;D which, to me, means i've played him well.

haven't updated this in a bit, so i'll say a few words now. players are now up to seven. some great developments happening between everyone. great prolonged battle with the rat-ogre, which killed one PC. they saw a huge shadow in the darkness of the temple room (#5 i think) after triggering the second pit over the urine canal and assumed it was another rat-ogre. they developed super elaborate plans to cross the pit and assault the rat-ogre. magicked arrows hit it with resounding ringing echoes, since it was the bronze statue. anti-climactic, but kinda funny.
progression is halting as it's a slow weekly turn format, but it has some great amateur story text coming out of it. most of the players are newbies, so this is a good introductory adventure for them. everything is chronicled at my catalyst9 yahoo group. posts are public, but to see all the files, including the edited story, you have to be a member. if anyone is interested, let me know. anyway, thanks again to mike for a great adventure and permission to use it for our group.

the party was greatly intrigued by the rat statue and its statuettes, but didn't figure out how to produce new statuettes. they did play with its arm, resetting the floor traps. a new player has joined, so i had him take over hobnail, as i needed an excuse why he'd be in the dungeon. seems to be working so far....

Just a quick thanks to you Hogscape for Dungeon of the Rat. I downloaded it ages ago but got a chance to GM it last week. Lots of fun. Some enjoyable bits were when one of the characters (a juvenile delinquent wizard with a compulsion to graffiti tag and smoke furtively) forgot about the reed matting in the temple of the rat god and nearly burned the place down. The bath frog was also good value as one of the fighters had just made great play of producing his broadsword with a fine speech hoping to intimidate the grumpy amphibian... he got a shock when he failed the SR on speed and the tongue got his weapon. And the fight in the pack rat den was like something out of a Jackie Chan movie -- great buckets of dice being rolled... ratlings flying through the air in "Matrix"-like slow motion... the party managed to survive by the skin of their teeth. I didn't ever think they'd get through the door with the guardian rat... until they finally attacked it with everything... including the rat paw... at which point I rapped on the table and the penny dropped with the players So a great dungeon, everything tied in quite nicely. Little things like having some rope in the stores near the trapped corridor in room 3 was cool because 2 of the party found that while the other was getting mauled by the water rat. Thanks Oli

That's my very great pleasure Oli. It sounds like you ran the adventure in the very way I imagined it should be run when I was writing. Great feedback, thank you so much!

we finally finished up DotR in our online game. everyone seemed to enjoy it, although they were a bit miffed they wouldn't get to take on the rat god directly. overall, a fun, solid adventure, especially for new players.

Running this with my group, so far only 2 rooms done. They really enjoyed the roleplay interrogating Snivler, especially when one member started interrogating him in rat (the joy of the 5e language table) and his strenuous denials of rat status continued in ratese, until he realised he had been tricked. Great stuff.
Looking forward to running them through this and Skolari vaults. I have had to double MR values, but its all about making it an appropriate challenge.

And the fun continues. The frog room was a real challenge, especially when the lantern died!
The group also entertained themselves with one of my descriptions
'You hear hoarse panting' (a Goblin wandering monster)
'We hear a horse panting. how on earth did that get down here?'
Well , i guess you had to be there.

I just recieved the T&T Campaign book from "that company". It has this Dungeon and The Skolari Vaults in it. This is an excellent first dungeon for new PCs. So excellent, in fact, that I will be running it at ConQuest Vegas in April.

And the fun continues - this week it was the rat nest. The players were very spooked at the rat eyes glowing in the darkness, and the high pitched squeaking, but they bravely faced down 3 waves of ratlings swarming and catapulting towards them.
After wave 3 the Leprechaun rogue makes an intimidatory speech, standing atop the bodies of 17 dead ratlings, on the lines of 'now you think about what you have done, stop interfering with the nice landlords cellar' and rolls over twice! for a total of 40 on the Charisma check - i had decided a L5 save was about right ;D
The rats slink off. just the remainder of the temple to clear out.
