The DarkIsles Calendar Since the arrival of Black Lucas the region has slowly adopted the eclectic calendar of the Golden Empire which recognizes the four seasons but names each day for a particular animal. This is particularly confusing to those new to the region; some of the animals featured in the calendar are unheard of in the Dark Isles, some are now extinct, even in Aratau and still more are mythological beasts.
Every eighth day is often set aside as a day of rest or worship and commonly referred to as Regent’s Day; this doesn’t refer to a monarch but to a giant reptilian creature that is still seen in remote Aratauan jungle lands. This is based on the perfectly sound assumption that if a giant lizard is on the rampage, you stay indoors!
To further confuse matters, some animal names are repeated in the calendar (the Third Day of the Speckled Gecko). Yet more bizarre: every eighth year, the animals cycle forward or backward on the edict of the Aratauan pontiff so what was the Second Day of the Black-Crested Rooster this year may be a different critter the next!
