Does anyone have any house rules about how they handle drunkenness or other kinds of intoxication? How it affects attributes or combat ability?

I have a Leprechaun in the game I'm GMing who is drinking everything in sight and I'm trying to figure out how this should effect him. My off the cuff idea is to reduce DEX and SPD by 1 for each drink and increase CHR by 1 point up to 5 drinks. After 5 drinks CHR goes down by 1 point per drink. Should INT goes down 1 point per drink as well?
I'm not sure how to handle LK. Maybe drunkenness would sometimes enhance LK, sometimes detract, LK becomes erratic? If a SR vs. LK is needed, roll 1d6. Odds LK goes up by the number of drinks for the purposes of that SR only, evens and LK goes down by the number of drinks for the purposes of that SR only. So if someone is drinking, perhaps playing a game in a tavern involving LK (or fighting) and is making more than one SR vs. LK, s/he could have a different effective LK rating for each saving roll.

I seem to remember rules for getting drunk in Weirdworld - not what they are, just that there were ones.

Hmm that rings a bell, it must be in a Solo somewhere... Seaching....
Aha, in Labyrinth [Solo 3] paragraph 28A
5 or &: The food is quite safe but the strong wine makes you drunk. Your hosts find this amusing. Being drunk means your Dexterity and Constitution will be reduced by half and your Luck increased by 1 for 4 regular turns or 2 combat turns. Stagger to 2F.

Zanshin is also correct Weridworld 8C
You have become drunk. Add two to your strength, but subtract two from your 10 and dexterity. Now leave by the north door (go to lOB) or the north corridor (go to 15C). The 8e apparatus, otherwise known as a still, disappears. Sober up when you leave Weirdworld administer the breathalyzer test.

Thanks Zanshin and Mike! That helps. I think I will add reduced INT to the mix. I like LK being erratic as opposed to just getting higher. And keeping it a mechanic instead of fixed numbers makes sense if there is the opportunity to drink less or more. Interested if anyone has worked this out in a specific way for their own campaign. Now if I can just figure out how to handle drunk Wink-Winging.

On the other hand, a leprechaun is probably the one race that could outdrink a dwarf.... booze is as much a part of leprechaun lore as gold and rainbows... so in my game i would probably shoot for some even MORE crazy variations.. or simply allow the leprechaun to drink EVERYTHING under the table.

Good point Devadasi! I actually was thinking that Leprechauns might have a different set of rules just for them. Like maybe their luck just keeps going up. But I think there has to be something that detracts from the character's abilities, even if just a little. I'll work it out before the next gaming session.
You know, it's kind of telling that the leprechaun character's name in my campaign is "Jameson" or "Jamie" for sort.
Good to see you on Trollhalla tonight!

But... When they DO get drunk, Trrebmahl... Iq and Dex take definite hits, as do Strength (try it sometime - get as drunk as a skunk and try picking stuff up) Charisma, and Con (all that puking ISN'T good for you). In the past I've halved IQ and Dex, put Char down by two-thirds (take that, you Elf!), and taken at least a quarter each off Con and Str both. That's for "Oh, Gods, It's Friday" style drunk. For "I just lost my girl, my job, and my pet" style, I've taken them all down half AGAIN - and kept them there for three or four game days. I'm a MEAN GM.

Hmmm... yes, high tolerance for Leprechauns. I get where you both are coming from. I like your style unclecranky. Thanks for the ideas...

I'm with Unclecranky. All stats should go down once drunk to a greater extent. This is where we get such lovely terms as "beer muscles, beer goggles, beer muffs, shellacked, three-sheets-to-the-wind, belligerent, blacked out and impaired judgement". Which lends itself very nicely to a random table on the effects of carousing after a failed SR.
The only thing I might consider to differ from character to character is, how well they can handle their liquor/how many drinks it takes them to get drunk. Maybe handle this by weight or race or CON? Whatever suits you.

Thanks Derv for your input! Like your ideas about varying tolerance. Weight and kindred are probably the most attractive to me. Very helpful...

Well, let's see, Dwarves, Hobbits and Leprechauns are all OBVIOUS drunkards, and while Elves don't imbibe THAT much, it's clear that they're slipping their guests SOMETHING in their wine (otherwise how would a race so clearly hideous get SO much nooky?). Fairies, on the other hand, seem to be surviving on a steady diet of fermented nectar... Humans drink responsibly. And maybe Orcs. Sure, both kindreds have their sots (and what kindred DOESN'T?), but on the whole...

trrebmahl, I mentioned random tables for carousing before and thought I'd share this one from Jeff Rients blog. I think it's a classic and worth checking out. jrients.blogspot.com/2008/12/party-like-its-999.htmlIt's funny, but I never really ran into this in any of my games and never had to consider how to handle it. Though, it really gets me thinking of some twisted scenarios that I believe would curve such behavior......I'm thinking of possible unique adventures that might occur while the character is passed out, maybe waking up on another plane, planet, or prison barge. Just a thought (:

Very cool derv. Thanks for sharing the link. Helpful and fun. So far the tippler in question has just been drinking while exploring the lower levels of a palace. He got into some kegs of ale in a store room and drank a healing potion when his CON was already at maximum, pissing off the other characters. It seems if it is liquid, he can't stay away, he's not picky. I can totally see him getting into trouble at some point at an inn or out on the town where this table could be very useful. Do you know about this guy's random tables? www.rolang.com/archives/tag/tables
