You could in theory take the required Combat Adds asked for and divide by 4 (or 3 if using 5E). So if it states +30 CA or lower. That means do not go into dungeon with a poor dolt of +7 adds. So what we have +7/+8 on average. STR 20, DEX 19, SPD 19 and LK 20. This could also look like: STR 24, DEX 15, SPD 15 and LK 24 or something, and roll the usual 3d6 for other attributes. I've done that on occasion, or used say 75% of recommended. The problem is that the character can end up a little bland unless more work is done on development. I'm sort of moving towards generating a character as normal, then rolling additional dice against each attribute till I get somewhere near the right figure. That adds a certain amount of unpredictability. Then there's Talents and background... since characters in solos don't tend to last very long I'm thinking of some automated method to generate, not just a set of attributes, but some basic characteristics as well. Back to the AI conundrum in some ways. I actually enjoy creating characters from scratch, but it's sometimes nice to have a little "boost" to help create an interesting character I wouldn't necessarily have thought of on my own.

I find myself going back to Sword for hire and Bluefrog tavern; I do not reallty know why. Maybe it is beacuse of the humorus side-kick, that gives even a mediocre character a chance to beat the dungeon? That encouraged me to buy a copy of Blue Frog Tavern. Not got very far with it yet. Seems a logical follow-on. In view of the news about T&T I am actively restraining myself from writing some new rooms for Labyrinth; so far I have ideas for three different philosophers, some stuff based on the Odyssey and a few other things. I actually played Blue frog Tavern first, and that encouraged me to play Sword for hire. I also like the rendom ecounters in both.

Maybe a expansion for gaming in the antiquties would be in place? It's often struck me as odd that the weapon charts for T&T are taken from such a mixture of different cultures. (As well as some which are just made up.) I know it's fantasy and we can do what we want, but the amateur historian in me sometimes balks at the idea of an adventurer using an assemblage of kit from different continents. Though when I think about what I spent on GURPS supplements... Here's another question. How do people handle character advancement during solo prep? What I mean is, if the solo requires a 3rd level character and you don't have one to hand, do you recycle an old one from some kind of library of the heroically fallen? Try to work a new character up to the requisite level? Or "generate" a higher level character, either randomly or by allocating bonus points? Are there advantages/ disadvantages of each approach? And if you use the "generation" game, how much detail do you put into the character - is it a fully rounded adventurer or closer to a bare minimum set of attributes? Maybe it was because Ken was a libraian, and had the possibilty, and time, to pass through a lot of books on armement and such; or he wanted show that t&t could be complex with a lot of chooices. I don't know. Sometimes i like to use the excessive wepons list from the 7 ed., sometimes a prefer the on presented in Deluxe.

Mission for a Cat Goddess Credibility: Quite a lot of time spent on developing the backstory. For now, enough to make me want to find out more about the mythos although, and this is definitely a personal view, I would have preferred something a little more "exotic". It may be nitpicking, but there are historical prototypes for some of what is described and that led to me trying to second guess parts of the solo. Internal consistency: Given the background everything seemed well judged to create "atmosphere". No structure issues so far. It does feel as if it could just as easily be a dT&T solo. [...] It's a good solo and I'd like see more like it. Be aware that one or two areas are just slightly "PG". Nothing explicit, more... suggestive. Ken's the listed author, but if you've read any of the City of Gods (and know which pen names go where), the influences, editing, and additions are quite evident--to the solo's narrative benefit. There's an aesthetic alignment of Ken and Steve that when combined with full involvement of editors and co-contributors provides a good creative foundation to Trollgodfather Press.

I'm quite surprised by how long it is since I have posted anything in here.
I had a dabble with a solo today and something struck me quite forcefully: just how different life can be in the world of Monsters! Monsters! as opposed to T&T.
I created a character "Chiki the Bat Troll", largely because the Kindred modifiers looked as though they would give me roughly the right combat adds for the solo I was using. But my choice had some interesting effects.
Chiki's power of self-healing diminished the impact of any Spite hits scored against him, which meant that in any reasonably evenly matched contest he should be able to grind down the opposition eventually without suffering loss. This in fact happened on several occasions.
Chiki was not a magic-user (with an IQ of 3 he struggled to pronounce his own name), which in M!M! terms means that he had access to the "chaos factor". As I read the current version of the rules, this gave him the possibility of creating Spite hits against enemies he couldn't hurt by other means (there is some ambiguity in the rules as written, but I feel this interpretation is supported by the other examples in the rules).
None of this "broke" the solo, but it did suggest to me that there are additional complexities in balancing a scenario for M!M! (Plus of course, in a solo the monstrous enemy might also have access to the chaos factor which adds some complications to the way in which foes are handled).
Just some points to ponder.

Well, is this a M!M! corerules Bat Troll or the one from Zimrala (the two are very different), I presume the first, but who knows? It just a thought, but perhaps state that spite damage cannot be healed for any Trolls, the wounds are so deep and aggravating, that it takes days (or hours if preferred) to heal not seconds?
