Greetings, Vfults! Since everyone else is pushing you to throw away your life's savings, I'll be at least a bit kindly and refer you to this forum message: trollbridge.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1199758430wherein you can find links to a goodly number of T & T related sites containing useful (and often free!) material. One particular hoard of extremely good material in the list that has not already been mentioned is the Hobgoblin's Tavern. I'm hoping to finish rounding out my collection of Tavern products later this week.

Question: Where is this "Dark Side of T&T" by Ken of which you speak? I would really love to see that, if you can point me in the right direction! Like you said, I've never played T&T with a silly edge... but I just assumed that if anyone did, it would be Ken. I'd love to see what He has to say on this topic. Fenris, try this: www.geocities.com/lawgiver_qne/Trollzine0201/Story/Anology.htmlIf you really want to hear Ken's opinion on 'silly T & T', I can ask him to pop over and comment. I'm fairly certain that he has an account here, although I don't think that he's visited for quite a while.

Did Ken ever start/finish the work he spoke of in this article: a T&T sourcebook based on Mature Theme gaming? You know, I've never played T&T silly or funny. Since I'm very new to forum boards generally (and T&T boards specifically), I really was unaware that it was being played in a "silly" way. My first full game of T&T (as a player mostly, and then occasionally GMing; it became a "shared world" game) was a very "For Mature Minds" game. I don't think we spent hardly any time running amok in dungeons or whatever... we were too busy dealing with heavy drama and deep, immersive, meaningful storylines. I didn't start "dungeon crawling" until years later, when I discovered AD&D2e. (My two most played games after T&T are Cyberpunk 2020 and Vampire: The Masquerade, both of which are of the same mold as we were doing T&T). Nowdays it seems like dungeon crawling is all I do, and it's a lot of fun, don't get me wrong... but sometimes I do miss the depths I got to explore back in the "olde days." Unfortunately, the new Cyberpunk sucks and Vampire has become a different game, but is still out there with passionate gamers who won't allow variation. The hobby seems to have changed in general... I recall a lot of us doing pretty powerful stuff back then. Anyway, if Ken ever finished his sourcebook, I'd love to see it. If anyone else has any T&T links to this kind of stuff, please post it or PM me with it. Thanks.

Welcome Vfults. Like you i was a longtime player of T&T solos, and a RP of other systems. My group has converted to T&T and we are having great fun, with a more tongue in cheek approach than our normal fare.
I hope you enjoy your time on these boards.

I hope I didn't sound like I think any type of play is wrong! One of the great beauties of T&T is it's near "generic universal" design, which, unlike many other rpgs, allows the creator to create anything he might wish, in any way he might wish. My first campaign was dead-arse serious. The campaign world I created after that was Heroic, and sometimes delved a bit into sci-fi. I still use that world, and it's been used time and time again in campaigns for over two decades. It is very fantastical; the kind of world where one might swing on chandeliers, if someone were to invent the chandelier. I'm currently looking into a Dark Ages style campaign, which I intend to be Heroic yet realistic. I don't plan on allowing chandelier swinging, but PCs should be able to battle opponents mightier than they and win. While I've never played straight-up goofy, that's merely a matter of personal taste... and the games are silly fun to the players sitting around the table! Just the story doesn't turn into the silly, but I always want to have fun while playing, or why play? If I have insulted anyone's playstyle, I apologize! I'd gladly play in anybody's campaign, in any style! And, as noted, T&T allows any and all styles freely. You can even mix and match, or alternate! Let's see you try that with WoD!

In the latest Hobbit Hole is an article called "In Moria". I'm thinking that that's a transcript of a real game Ken, Bear, and Liz played. And if so, omg...that would be the group to game with!

@fenris - if my post provoked your response, certainly no offence was being taken or intended. As previously discussed the spell names and the mood of most of teh solos encourage a fun , anything goes approach. But whatever works and is enjoyed is right for the group playing it.

As previously discussed the spell names and the mood of most of teh solos encourage a fun , anything goes approach. But whatever works and is enjoyed is right for the group playing it. OPINION ALERT: The following is strictly a personal opinion! Your Mileage May Vary, and opposing viewpoints are respected! See, I always felt the reason for the silly spell names was as a "tension break," to keep players from getting so weighed down by the events in-world that they became emotionally exhausted; it gave a bit of fun to what could become too deeply-involving (and don't forget, this was considered a "problem" back in those days). This is akin to the director who puts a moment in a tense scene that makes the audience laugh. The scene remains tense, but the nervous laughter of the audience makes it bearable to keep moving through a scene that you would otherwise find too heavy-going. Admittedly, I like heavy-going, and don't always like when directors break a scene with a light moment, but it works well in roleplaying-- better, perhaps, than in the movies from which the idea came, because the lightness is outside the world. A better comparison might be watching a MST3K version of Lord of the Rings or Conan. The events in the movie are played straight; it's the people standing outside the movie watching the events that are cracking the jokes. Certainly there's nothing funny about a Player Character being hung on a cross and being pecked to death by vultures, but we watching Conan The Barbarian can certainly come up with more than a few snarky comments during that scene in the movie. The funny spell names give a mental break in what would otherwise simply be too draining for some players, especially considering that in a roleplaying game you are an active participant in the events being described. After all, it's one thing to watch someone being hung on a cross and being eaten by vultures, it's something else to be that person on the cross being eaten.

Hello all. I guess I should introduce myself! My lifestyle makes it very hard to get a gaming group going. So around a year ago I rediscovered the T&T solos. What a blast! Since then I've seen the light and most of my other RPGs have had to take a back seat. T&T truly has something about it that other games lack, especially modern games. I think it's a combination of the enthusiasm and sheer creativity of the first years of the RPG hobby with the brilliance of Ken's design. Both then and now, most other games seem to be about being structured and counting beans rather than fantasy and fun. So I am very happy to find an online nest of T&T fanatics keeping the faith. T&T was actually my second RPG, Traveller being the first. I bought a copy of the 5th ed boxed set in 1985. The only solo I got at the time was City of Terrors, in the original printing. This one remains my favourite. I just got the 30th Anniversary edition, and am still making my mind up about it. Right now I have two projects in mind: one, a fairly standard fantasy setting, and two, a science-fantasy setting which I was going to do using my own homebrewed system, but now I think that T&T7 would fit perfectly. cheers, Fizzwizz

T&T truly has something about it that other games lack That would be the highly addictive psychtropic drugs that were embedded in the pages... Wait, did I say that out loud?

Welcome-this place is rather addictive, especially if you don't have a group right now... If it's any consolation I know how you feel. I have an intermittent group (about twice a month) always debating about the next system for the next Campaign-and every time I mentioned T&T i'd get shot down. Then one day a few of them played a pickup T&T game at a local Con-now the group can't get enough! So keep Soloing and Hang In There!

Psychotropic drugs...maybe THAT's why the Gang's all getting this sudden urge to play the old 4th Edition game-it's an older game but a fresh print! ;D
