Hi folks, More tinkering for the new decade. Mostly just tidying up some grammar and a few minor adjustments to spell descriptions but a major change to one element - encumbrance is now no longer a 'rule'; if the GM thinks the characters are hauling too much loot he tells them and that's that! I've also reverted back to the original method of awarding experience points (based on hours played). For interested parties, the updated PDF can be found here: sites.google.com/site/thedarkisles/pdf-files/4thEditionMk32.pdf?attredirects=0&d=1

Hey, thanks bdfiscus! I hope your son is having fun. I found that whenever I imposed the enc. or weight unit rule the game got bogged down in book keeping... "Hang on, I can't carry that extra sword? You didn't say anything when I picked up that spare shield and mace... Let's see what else I can't carry..." BTW, I print my copies in A4 booklet format so I end up with neat little A5 books to hand out. The text is not too bad on the eye at that size either.

encumbrance is now no longer a 'rule'; if the GM thinks the characters are hauling too much loot he tells them and that's that! That's cool. Even in games that cover encumbrance, it's what I've always done, and I suspect most of us do anyhow. But you could always make the granularity of such more...chunky. Like S&W's 'typical gear and so on weighs 10 pounds' or some such. Then all you'd have to track would be bag o' loot. In fact...encumbrance could be just that. PCs can carry no more than x bags o' loot. Like a simple money system in a way: A character can carry 10 small coin bags, two large sacks, two small chests or one large chest (with no free hands). Or...something like that only clever. Heck yeah. Good choice. I've always loved Garen's illustration there.

Mach, I've replaced the anal encumbrance system with a choice of either 'eye-ball it and make a call' or assume a character can carry a number of items equal to his ST where an item is something you could comfortably carry in one hand - don't get dirty on me now...
Just off to weigh my item.

Just off to weigh my item. Imperial, American, Metric or Hong Kong units? ;D

'anal encumbrance system' gives entirely the wrong impression, Hogscape!

'anal encumbrance system' gives entirely the wrong impression, Hogscape! And a whole new visual for Toon's Back Pockets concept...

'anal encumbrance system' gives entirely the wrong impression, Hogscape! It's okay, I've got one of those special cushions shaped like a donut. A big donut.

For interested parties, the updated PDF ... I'll confess that I haven't played 4E yet, but you have done an outstanding job on this! (I still cherish my 5E rulebooks and hesitate to move "backwards" but this may tip me in that direction.) Well done! Oh, and I was worried about "anal encumbrance" at first, but now I understand the rule. You should have mentioned the donut in the OP.
