Well gamepunk26, concider yourself Exalted for your tireless efforts. It is pretty cool that Rick made time to play. I heard him say recently, "The problem with making your hobby a business is you have no time for your hobby." Or something very close to that. I'm impressed you make so much time for conventions. Makes me feel even more out of it. Thanks. I love conventions. Las Vegas finally has a couple of decent small conventions that made enough to come back. Neoncon this October, Conquest in the spring, and some sort of new-fangled sci-fi convention will be here spring 09 as well. Strategicon is three times a year on the President's Day, Memeorial Day, and Labor Day weekends. Since I live so close I can make it to at least one, but I intend to try to get to two next year. I will run T&T at any convention I attend if I am able. I run the 5th ed rules because FBI has those swell Free RPG day books. I prefer 6th edition in my own games, but I want to check out 7.5. Which one do y'all think would be the best to support at a convention? 5th ed is classic and still available, but 7.5 has more in common with more recent RPGs and may be more palatable to T&T noobs and new D&D players. Thoughts?

Since characters won't be advancing, aren't the main differences WIZ and Spite Damage, both of which are common house rules for 5th edition anyway?

For conventions and demo play I suggest you use the newest ones and say that's there's a older edition still in print as well. It's a big source of confusion so focus on the newest one like they do for all other games.

I must begrudgingly agree. Using and "pushing" 7.5 make a whole lot of sense.
You could print out a simple little sheet that very briefly explains that other versions of the game are available and in print and give links to the sellers and links to places to download and buy adventures for the game, etc. Ya know...links for: Fiery Dragon Flying Buffalo "that company" Hobgoblin's Tavern and so on...

Personally, I would push 5ed for conventions. 7ed's biggest divergence from 5ed is level advancement. Talents are just formalizing what Jim "Bear" Peters has done from the beginning. Talents can be confusing to a noobie. It is better to introduce the concept inside a convention game than to ask someone "So you've got a talent what is it?" Although the blank look on someone's face is very funny indeed.

I'll also note that a difference from 5th to 7th is the formal addition of SPD (I believe it was optional in 5th), and the inclusion of its bonus into combat adds. Thus, 7th edition characters will generally have higher combat adds. It's a bit of power creep, but it's usually not major unless you're dealing with highly experienced characters.

I agree with both LionRampant and Mahrundl. Might as well keep playing 5ed. Everything else just confuses noobies.

What really confuses noobies is that there are so many editions that's "current".
Anyway. Being crystal clear on the fact that T&T is a game where a new edition don't mean buying all new books, and haven't been since 1979, *that* is the most important thing.

I'd actually say to go with 7th edition, not 5th. Fiery Dragon has the latest printing of the game, so that is what I would use to introduce new players, solely because it is the newest from an established gaming company they may have heard of before.

I think that may be the core of the matter right there, actually. That is, that the game is a major demand on the wallet and certainly not just every few years and will make all of your previous edition material null and void. Not only do you have multiple versions to choose from... all are complete, none require the other and they're all far from expensive. Accentuate the positive. ....Sounds really odd coming from me, but still.....

Wow. I totally wrote exactly the wrong thing in that last post of mine!
What I meant to say was: That is, that the game is not a major demand on your wallet and certainly not every few years all the while making your previous edition material null and void.
There. Now I don't sound crazy.
