I kind of like the older version of Buffalo castle. It's the one you were playing, right?! I found it a little bit frustrating with the quest for the potion that they included in the deluxe version: if you fail, you are banned from re-entering the keep - no fun. But the illustrations are good! There are, like you mentioned in your blog, a lot of corridors in the eastern part of the castel, and that is tedious. If you compare it to the solos written by St Andre, where you have action (deadly usually) in every paragraph. But I still love Buffalo castel, and it was the first; a tough act to follow!

Yea, I have the Deluxe one too, but haven't played that one yet. I love all this early material. I have got to get back at it here pretty quick (a lot going on). I almost want to take another run at the Castle before moving on, but I may just come back to it later...and yep...it's the old one indeed.

Just wanted to thank you for pointing out the work of Polly Wilson, Rat Salad . I have fond memories of a lot of that art, especially the pieces from the Fiend Factory in White Dwarf. I didn't realise that she also did the Sorcerer's Cave box art!

I've learned a lot about my favorite game from all you guys. A lot of good leads, ideas and play tips.

For about two decades, until I bought 5th edition, that was the only T&T art I knew.
Of course my original copy of the rule book has a unique version of the art, coloured in by myself with pencils and also with scruffy notes in the margins. I could kick myself for the way I defaced that book when I was in my teens.

Oh man, personally I love that sort of customization. I know what you are saying, on one hand, but on the other, those are memories bonded to the game...your game, actually. I have an old DM's Guide that has "Iron Maiden" stickers on the inside, and a full page drawing of a "sexy girl" in chain mail with a sword...ha, ha. High school; what can I say....

It was a well loved volume. Even now I get it out and read it sometimes. Later editions added a lot of good stuff, but really everything I'd ever need is in that little book.

Which edition is that, houndle, is that the British one that has the black cover with the spiral on the front? Or is it the comb bound 4th edition? The Brit. 5th ed. has the crayon orange cover, right? I'm really interested in all of those...one of these days I'm going to get my hands on those editions. As I've said before, I really wish the American distribution copies would have been the mono-colored ones that were there. I really like the look and approach to those (from what I've seen)...

My copy has the black cover with a white spiral. According to the introduction it is based on the 2nd edition of T&T plus the T&T Supplement. I'm not sure what the latter means, but there is a piece by Ken St Andre in the back describing a campaign setting called Warriorworld, which must have predated Trollworld. KSA was already throwing in house rules for the new setting.
The inside back cover had an advert for a play by mail game called StarWeb - anybody play that? I was intrigued by it, but given the pace of Transatlantic post I couldn't see how I could submit any moves in time.
