Oh cool, I was thinking it might be that copy! I'm going to dig one of those up someday. If you ever find one, I'll trade you some old, rare T&T stuff from here that you might have wanted or do want! I never played STARWEB, but remember it...never actually knew anyone that played the play-by-mail-post games, but I grew up in a really small and secluded town.

I'll keep my eyes open, but I haven't seen one for a very long time.
Annotations aside, my copy is looking pretty fragile these days - the paper quality was not very good and over time it has become quite brittle. I'm tempted to try and get it scanned, the scribbles digitally removed and reprinted on better paper. But somehow it wouldn't be the same.
I'm also tempted to track down some people I went to school with in the 1970s just in case any of them retained their copies.

I wish it could be had (legally, of course) on pdf. Then I could just make a booklet copy of it. It's too bad that a lot of the old FB stuff out there on the game probably won't be had again except in insane priced originals online.

To be fair, except for the art and the essay in the back, the content is not very far removed from the 1st edition you are probably familiar with. Well there is one additional table which makes zero sense to me, which I think may actually be a code for the typesetter. So it's more of a collector's piece than something which adds to the lore of the game. I might do a comparison of the text at some point to see how much actually changed (my copy of 1st edition is a PDF I bought on Drivethru).
This "UK edition" business must have been a thing at the time - I also had a D&D rulebook which was printed under licence. That one got lost somewhere in the mists of time.

I'm tempted to try and get it scanned, the scribbles digitally removed and reprinted on better paper. Nothing saying you can't simply take photos of each page with your phone. That would, at the very least, preserve the record of your tome. Could even convert those to a PDF. Beyond that, there are apps which would allow you to 'scan' each page. Once those are scanned, it would be simple enough to engage the services of a print shop to build a new version from more durable stock. That way, you could still use the book, with all your unique inclusions, and archive the original to save it.

Yea, Ken and Co. beat D&D to the punch on the distribution in the UK, so they had those two product bases (American and the British one) moving at the same time. As an artist, the graphic approach to the UK ones has always intrigued me, along with the A5 size format of most of the materials for that market, the mono-colored covered, and the different art. I figured the content was otherwise the same, but the presentation is drastically different.

Thanks ProfGremlin, something like that had been going through my mind, but innate laziness prevented me doing anything about it. And actually, having done a little bit of cross checking overnight, I've become a little less inclined to do so... I had a look at T&T 1st edition, 4th edition and the "British edition" (the print copy I bought all those years ago). The British edition is closer to 1st than 4th, presumably reflecting some changes made in the 2nd edition (which I've never seen). Assuming that there is some continuity in all the US editions from 1st through 4th (i.e., there were no radical changes which then got reversed) it appears there was some substantial reorganisation and pruning for the British edition. Large chunks of text appear unaltered, but sometimes moved to a different place in the book. Most notably, a lot of the humorous asides were excised, presumably to avoid frightening us Brits. Nowadays I consider that stuff to be among the best material in the book, but the idea that a rulebook could amuse as well as instruct would have been pretty shocking in those days. So on the whole, I'm forced to conclude that my old copy of the rules is notable more for nostalgia value than anything else. If I wanted to do "old school" T&T I'd probably go for 4 th. Although I'd be more inclined to use Monsters! Monsters! which to my mind has the stripped-down feel of classic T&T, but with clarifications and improvements. Thread hijack over... Apologies Rat Salad

Interesting run down on the comparisons and what you've discovered on the UK edition...thank you. Very insightful and useful information!

I'll check this list out carefully against my own collection and will let you know...thanks for the offer too! This stuff is pretty rare, so I don't think I'll be able to hit the switch, but I'll study it more carefully tonight...

I have lots of other stuff to trade, rare and common, so don't just look at it "one for one". I am willing to come up on the shorter end pure "value" wise (2 for 1 or "more rare for less rare") in order to bring in something new. Anyone interested should PM me!

Cool! Sounds good. I'll see if I can put together a list of my collection and post it here before too long. I need to reorganize all my gear anyhow...it's all over the place right now. I hate it when that happens, but hectic life.

Thanks! You ever read about the "Tunnel Rats"? Seemed fitting for the game in a weird way. You should look it up. It's interesting stuff. I remember my dad talking about it a lot when he was overseas in the 60s.
