Well, it might be very true that the clones bring in people. Sometimes it feels like just old men who had left the field when their last 1st ed PHB fell apart back in the eighties. But! More visibility is good, I'm not arguing that!

Nothing in them is aimed at T&T; generally, I don't even retain the files after whatever campaign ends.
However, my AD&D2E world is delineated at wiki.hostman.us in the games section. (I've not been bothered to purge it; that setting has grown over the years; we revisited it last year. And realized, shockingly, AD&D2E is the worst laid out D&D edition. Can't find squat. Ebooks with search darned near essential. Cleric-heavy setting.)

What name should this clone have? Heh. I've no idea. My first knee-jerk thought is that I'm certainly sick to death of 'alliterative ampersand' names. Having "troll" in the name would seem to make sense...but...I dunno. In fact, none of the other clone names really make it obvious that they're clone nor what they are clones of. Mutant Future is the only one that comes to mind that gives a hint of just what it is (in regards to the original).

Two unrelated responses, one to the first post of this thread, and one to the last three:
Apparently, Rick has managed to license T&T for four figure sums in the past, and continues to occasionally have oportunites to do so. His attitude to an OGL is that he would rather have occasional windfalls with little or no effort than actually have to WORK at making T&T bigger for very little return. From his point of view, T&T would produce very little additonal income even if the community grew by a factor of ten.
Second, and off in the world of the weird, I am working half-heartedly at a probably-will-never-see-daylight 17th century mashup of the T&T engine that wants to be called "Gunwales and Gnolls". I knid of hate it, but the masochistic part of my brain refuses to let me change it.

I'm working on one at the moment and I'm calling it Swords and Deviltry but only because that's my favourite Lhankmar book and Greymouser is the ultimate Rogue.

The Lankhmar books and their wonderful, pulpy, s&s titles.... *swoon* It's kinda a pity that Swords & Wizardry is out there with such a similar name...

From his point of view, T&T would produce very little additonal income even if the community grew by a factor of ten. That's some interesting info. As I alluded to earlier, it's sorta difficult to pass judgement on a guy who's kept the second oldest rpg still in print after well over thirty years despite it being so relatively unpopular and niche of a niche of a niche... Having said that. It makes total sense for him. I must agree (given what little info I've read). My question, I suppose, is more about us. What do we have when these folks are no longer doing what they do and what they've done? What's been done has (oddly) worked for them and the game and it's fans. But when they're no longer with us?........ T&T has and does stand at a unique place. Second oldest. Arguably the first 'rules-lite' rpg. Still in print. Still in print largely unchanged from it's initial release all that time ago. It's virtually an rpg time capsule. A living rpg time capsule. It would be a big shame to see it go, even if I weren't a fan at all. I only hope steps are taken to preserve it, and if not, that steps can be taken later to 'build it again' for purpose the same.

Since our hyena friend is friendly with Rick, maybe he can suggest to get that point across to Rick. I wonder if he thinks he can afford to think about us in that way.

I'm of mixed minds on this whole thing. On one hand I started a thread a lot like this one a year or more ago, so I think that some sort of a clone would be neat, but on the other hand I don't really want to make Ken and Rick mad either.
As others have stated, the purpose of a clone game is more to bring back an out-of-print game and less to steal revenue from a current company. OD&D and AD&D are out of print, are not being supported by WotC, and frankly look like they will receive zero support in the near future. However, OD&D and AD&D are nothing like the current D&D being marketed and I see this as a good reason to clone them. At this point in time, T&T does not fit this criteria becasue both 5E and 7E are getting support. If at some time Ken/Rick decide to support 7E but not 5E, then there would be a clear need to have a clone of 5E.
On the other hand, I would like to see the basic T&T engine applied to other settings. Sure I can home-brew some, but it's also neat to have others do the gruntwork and get to share in their efforts. A clone would help make this possible, since anyone could take the clone and apply it to thier own era or setting.
The bottom line is that at the moment I don't see T&T really growing. There aren't many T&T products being made. There is no longer a T&T magazine of the quality of Sorcerer's Apprentice. There don't seem to be many fans of T&T, not much of a presence on the web, not a lot of reason for a new gamer to bother to check out T&T. The game will die if it doesn't get some sort of infusion of new energy, and if an OGL or clone will do that then I'm all for it.
T&T is a great game. It's just that no one seems to know about it.

T&T is a great game. It's just that no one seems to know about it. That has been my feeling for the lat 25 years or so... I was very excited to find Trollbridge, Trollhalla, and "that company". I was sure that all that was left of T&T was a few tattered copies of 5e and some solos mouldering away in Rick's basement. Now I discover there is a small, but fiercely loyal T&T fan community. I agree with Vin, what ever it takes to get the old girl some of the attention she deserves.
